She rubbed her tired eyes, careful not to damage her eye make-up. Not that it mattered. She\u2019d been stuck in the library all night, and no one who\u2019d appreciate proper eye shadow and mascara application was going to see her, anyway!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She sighed and rested her elbow on the table, cradled her chin in her hand. She stared at Xander, who had his own musty book to yawn over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They\u2019d come so close to an actual date. Not making out in her car, or hanging with their (mostly <i>his<\/i>, to be honest) friends at the Bronze or whatever. Nope, this was a special occasion. He asked her out to a movie, and pizza after. And <i>he<\/i> wanted to pay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, what happens? Well, this morning, half a dozen mauled bodies are found in various parks and cemeteries in the general vicinity of the high school. The Sunnydale PD\u2014who manage to keep a lid on things until an unnamed source gives an interview for the evening edition\u2014blames the attacks on unidentified \u201canimals\u201d. Giles concludes something new and deadly is in town, and they <b>had to<\/b> identify what Buffy might be up against. A call goes out for the Scoobies to assemble. And here they are!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rolling her eyes at the un-fun fest her life had become, Cordy glanced at Willow. The redhead was at the computer, a faint smile on her lips as she happily typed away at the keys. No doubt hacking into wherever for clues to narrow down the search. Because there were a <i>lot<\/i> of creatures that liked to maul things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oz seemed content to sit next to her and leaf through the book that rested on his lap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Giles was in his office, on the \u2018phone, trying to connect with someone who knew about similar incidents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>And I\u2019m bored,<\/i> Cordy thought. She added a name to the long list of Things That Like To Tear People Apart, and closed her book. Finally!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The library doors flew open, and Buffy Summers made her usual, dramatic entrance. \u201cWe\u2019re back!\u201d she announced to the room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel entered behind her, as quiet and dark as a shadow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBuffy?\u201d The Watcher exited his office. \u201cDid you encounter anything out of the ordinary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNope.\u201d The Slayer shook her head. \u201cJust your normal, run-of-the-mill vampires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnybody else think it\u2019s scary that we think vamps are normal?\u201d Xander asked. He cast a glance towards Angel. \u201cAnd mill-runny?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHey, I found some stuff!\u201d Willow exclaimed. And she sounded way to cheerful. \u201cAccording to the autopsy reports, whatever attacked the victims was big. Like, man-sized big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo,\u201d Buffy said, \u201cwe can cross dog-sized and breadbox-sized bitey thingies off the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYeah. Also, from the bite marks, it looks like each victim was attacked by a single\u2026um, thingy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Giles nodded with satisfaction. \u201cMeaning, we can eliminate creatures that attack their victims in packs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhoa!\u201d Xander reared back in his chair. \u201c<i>That<\/i> dredges up some bad memories I\u2019ve managed to repress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordelia frowned at him. \u201cI thought you said you didn\u2019t remember that whole hyena pack deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Which made Xander look really uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBut,\u201d Willow added, \u201cthe coroner thinks at least two \u2018animals\u2019 are responsible for the attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo, a couple of beasts who maybe like to hang out,\u201d Oz suggested, \u201cbut don\u2019t like to share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYes.\u201d Giles looked thoughtful. \u201cA creature and its mate, perhaps?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As Willow revealed other fun facts from the autopsy reports, and the list of suspects narrowed down even more, Cordy yawned again. She was so tired. And not just from all the research. After that thing last night, when she thought she saw someone outside her bedroom window, she just couldn\u2019t get to sleep. Because, even though she <i>knew<\/i> there was no one out there, she couldn\u2019t get rid of the <i>feeling<\/i> that there <i>was<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She finally had to pull out a book and read until she dropped off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Putting a hand to the back of her neck, Cordelia massaged her stiff muscles. Turned her head from side to side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And looked straight into Angel\u2019s black\/brown eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After arriving in the library, the vampire had disappeared into the deepest, darkest corner, which was pretty typical. And he hadn\u2019t said a single word. Also typical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What <i>wasn\u2019t<\/i> typical was him staring at her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Frowning, Cordy waited for him to glance away. That\u2019s what most people did when they were caught staring at her. It was what <i>Angel<\/i> usually did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Angel didn\u2019t glance away this time. Didn\u2019t look at all embarrassed or ill at ease. He just\u2026stared. His black gaze steady. His face devoid of expression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was Cordelia who looked away. Who felt uncomfortable. Uneasy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThank you, Willow.\u201d Giles smiled at the computer whiz. \u201cThat shortens the list a great deal. Buffy,\u201d he said to the Slayer, \u201cI need to speak to you for a moment.\u201d And he turned towards his office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHey, wait!\u201d Cordy exclaimed, realizing her chance was about to slip away. \u201cI finished my book, Giles. So, I guess that means I can\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cStart on another.\u201d The librarian handed her a slip of paper. \u201cThese should prove useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy groaned. It was a list of five book titles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As Buffy and Giles disappeared into the office, Xander smirked at his girlfriend. \u201cThat\u2019s why I read really, really slow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rolling her eyes, Cordy stood up and disappeared into the stacks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sad part was, Cordelia knew where all the weird books on Giles\u2019s list were. Eyes narrowed, she looked from the list to the bookshelves. Now, which one of these books was the thinnest?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTry this one,\u201d a voice said from behind her. And an arm appeared on her right side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Startled, Cordy took a step back\u2026and slammed into the large, cool body behind her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a shocked gasp, Cordy jumped forward. Spun around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel was standing there. Face expressionless. Looking at her like he hadn\u2019t just scared 10 years off of her life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis one,\u201d he repeated, and held the book out to her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a long moment, Cordy stared at him in disbelief. True, she didn\u2019t know Angel all that well. But it didn\u2019t take a bosom buddy to know he was acting weird even for <i>him<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>What\u2019s your damage?<\/i> she almost asked. But didn\u2019t. Something stopped her. Maybe it was the way his gaze flickered across her face. From her eyes. To her mouth. Back again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maybe it was the way he was too close\u2026and took a step towards her that brought him even closer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy stepped back, until her body was pressed against the bookshelves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still holding out the book, he watched her with curious eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUm, th-thanks,\u201d she said. She took the book, and waited for him to move so she could get by. But he didn\u2019t. Instead, he pushed his hands into the pockets of his duster and just\u2026stood there. Staring at her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy cradled the book to her chest, and felt her heart pound against the hard cover. What the hell was wrong with him? Was this some kind of weird, vampire thing? If so, it was creeping her out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEx<b>cuse<\/b> me!\u201d she said, putting a little Queen C sharp into it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And, with the faintest of smiles, he stepped off to the side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a sigh of relief that she would never admit to, Cordy hurried past him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She could feel him, right behind her. A pressure against her back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As she went down the steps to the main floor of the library, Giles and Buffy left the inner office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAngel and I will do another patrol,\u201d the blond said. \u201cThe night\u2019s still young. And who knows. We might still run across something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThat\u2019s a good idea,\u201d Giles mumbled, his real attention was on the book is his hands. \u201cBe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s my middle name,\u201d Buffy said. The skeptical looks she received from around the room made her smile with chagrin. \u201cMost of the time. See ya, guys.\u201d Then, nodded towards Angel (which seemed to be the \u2018follow me\u2019 signal) and started towards the door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel walked around Cordelia, body brushing against hers as he passed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the Slayer and the vampire left the library, Cordelia returned to her seat, and opened the book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was fifteen minutes before her confused mind could focus on the words printed on the page.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, Giles let them go. Just when Cordy was about to mention child-labor laws, and cruel-and-unusual punishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue tomorrow afternoon,\u201d he said as they filed out of the library.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy couldn\u2019t <i>wait<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordelia dropped Xander off at his house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not off the hook, buddy,\u201d she told him. \u201cWe\u2019re still going out on that date. And <i>you\u2019re<\/i> still paying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYes, Mistress Cordelia,\u201d he grumbled. But he didn\u2019t get out of the car without a kiss or two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How someone with no social life before <i>her<\/i> had gotten so good with the smoochies, she\u2019d never know. And she wasn\u2019t about to complain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, Cordy went home. Parking her sporty red roadster in the circular driveway, she stumbled out of her car. She was so tired, all she could think about was jumping into bed and\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCordelia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The girl\u2019s startled shriek cut through the night. As a dog barked in a neighbor\u2019s yard, she spun around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel was standing there, just a few feet away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDamn it!\u201d Cordy exclaimed. Her heart pounded in her chest. \u201cWhat the hell are <i>you<\/i> doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The vampire shrugged. \u201cAfter I walked Buffy home, I decided to keep patrolling. I saw you drive up, and thought I should make sure you got into your house okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy put her hand to her heart and took a deep, calming breath. It made sense. She supposed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFine!\u201d she snapped. She glared at him. \u201cBut don\u2019t scare me like that <i>ever<\/i> again!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eyes steady on her flushed face, the vampire nodded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rolling her eyes, Cordy stalked up the front walkway, Angel hard on her heels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy took the keys out of her purse, and opened the front door. \u201cWell, thanks,\u201d she said grudgingly. And started to step inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suddenly, Angel grabbed her upper arm. Yanked her back, towards him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhat?!\u201d Cordy demanded, as she staggered on the porch. Snatching her arm out of his grasp, her hazel eyes stared daggers at him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Angel didn\u2019t see. Instead, he was looking through the open door. \u201cI thought I\u2026felt something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordelia\u2019s first instinct was to scoff. To tell him to just\u2026back off. Because with last night, and tonight, and everything, she was starting to feel\u2026crowded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then, she remembered his vampy senses. How he could see, hear, and maybe feel things normal people couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A shiver raced up her spine as she glanced inside. Was he trying to say someone\u2014some <i>thing<\/i>\u2014was in her house? \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIs anyone else home?\u201d Angel asked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWell, Mrs. Armstead,\u201d Cordy answered. The housekeeper was probably asleep by now. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure. Maybe nothing,\u201d Angel said. Then he looked at her, his eyes serious and concerned. \u201cI should probably look around, though. Just to be sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordy\u2019s almost stopped breathing. She looked at him, then quickly looked away. She thought of all the people who\u2019d invited Angel into their homes. Buffy. Giles. Willow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They all paid the price when Angelus came out to play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel stood there, watching her, waiting patiently. Like he knew what she was thinking. He probably did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Uncertain, Cordy glanced inside once again. What if there <i>was<\/i> something in there? Who would she rather have at her side when she confronted it? A kindly but distant housekeeper? Or a well-muscled, super-strong, battle-ready vampire?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To the practical part of her, there was no contest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI guess\u2026\u201d she finally said. Then, she shrugged. \u201cCome in, Angel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a nod, the vampire stepped through the door of the Chase residence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a moment\u2019s hesitation, Cordy followed him inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel walked through the lower level, head tilted to the side as he listened for something she\u2019d never be able to hear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He did a quick sweep upstairs. Seemed to pause when he opened her bedroom door. Eyes taking in every detail, every nuance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Cordy knew this was her imagination. Having a relative stranger look into her most private place, where she kept her most private things, was kind of weird.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By the time they reached the foyer, the worry was gone from his eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLike I said,\u201d he commented, \u201cprobably nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYeah,\u201d Cordy nodded. Feeling awkward, she opened the front door. \u201cWell\u2026good night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel graced her with one of his rare, small smiles. \u201cGood night.\u201d And he stepped outside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cordelia closed the door. Turned the deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>What a night.<\/i> she thought with a long sigh. <i>Weird on top of weird.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shaking her head, Cordy started up the stairs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And uneasiness fluttered, like nervous butterflies, in the pit of her stomach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Angel returned to his spot. It was where he\u2019d spent all of last night. Where he\u2019d remained, gazing up at her window, until false dawn lit the sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where he\u2019d be tomorrow night. And the next. And the next.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Arms folded, he leaned against the tree. He felt so\u2026relieved, to the very core of his being. Free, somehow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She\u2019d invited him in. The barrier was gone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He supposed he could have gotten the invitation from anyone. From the housekeeper. Or Cordy\u2019s parents, once they got home from wherever they were.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the fact that it was Cordelia who invited him in seemed more fitting. More\u2026right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just then, her bedroom light came on. Angel watched her silhouette move past the window.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His dead heart seemed to clench in his chest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cGood night, Cordy,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/goteamfiction.com\/index.php\/2015\/06\/26\/a-second-chance-5\/\">Part 5<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part 4 Yawning, Cordelia shifted in the hard, uncomfortable chair.
