Part 9

“Are you boys being good down here?”

“I’m still evil.”

“I’m sorry, sweetie. Did I hurt your feelings?” She arched a brow when she spotted the punching bag lying on the floor. “Did the mean bag hurt your feelings too?”

“I guess I don’t know my own strength these days.”

“Uh huh.” She picked up her practice sword. “I thought I’d join you guys for a workout. Which one of you is man enough to take me on?”

“Thanks Luv but one ass kicking from you was enough. I’m sure Angelus would like a rematch.”

“How about it, evil boy?”

“Sure. It sounds like someone needs a comeuppance.”

“Bring it on.”

Spike settled on the stairs. He watched as the lovers squared off against each other.

“So the soul was holding you back, huh? Talk is cheap. It’s time to show me what ya got.”

“Don’t worry, Cordy. I’m perfectly willing to let you cry on my shoulders after I knock you on your ass.”

“Are you two gonna gab all day or are you gonna fight?”

Cordelia’s response was to attack. Angelus carefully blocked her blows but didn’t return them. “Is my evil vampire holding back? Trying to save face perhaps? Maybe if you don’t actually try then it’s not like you really got your ass beat by your girlfriend? Again.”

Angelus caved at her taunts and launched his attacks. He still held back a little. He didn’t want to hurt her. *I have turned into a poof!*

What started out as play grew intense. Neither was able to get the upper hand. Cordelia tried to stay focused but slowly her mind drifted to the previous night. She was no longer fighting Angelus. Lilah’s voice pounded in her ears. She could hear the vampires casually discussing how they would violate her. She could feel their hands touching her. Her style changed.

Angelus noticed her eyes lost their sparkle. They darkened and her blows grew deadly. She started to radiate a combination of desperation, fear and rage. His last battle against the slayer flashed in his mind. Only this time he was the one who didn’t want to kill.

Spike tensed as the battle raged on. Gone were the taunts and light banter.

Angelus struggled to stay ahead of her attacks. He was seriously considering crying uncle, go team or whatever else she might want to hear.

Cordelia’s mind was lost in remembrance. The feeling of having her clothes torn from her body haunted her. She could feel their cold hands holding her down. Concern for her family prevented her from fighting back, but they weren’t here now. She kicked the side of his knee.

He grunted in pain. He expected her to step back in order to take a swipe with her sword, but she stepped in slamming the handle into his temple. He fell to the ground. His sword slipped from his hands. He saw her sword descend toward his neck. He wasn’t sure if she intended to stop. “Cor?”

As if waking from a dream, her name rolling off his lips brought her crashing back to reality. She froze mid-swing. “Oh God!”

Angel heard the metal hit the floor with a clang. Cordy dropped to her knees and buried her face in his neck sobbing. His arms instinctively wrapped around her. “It’s okay. Shh. Everything is okay.”

Spike watched silently from the stairs. His feelings of guilt came rushing back with a vengeance. He should have been there to protect her.

Angelus started rocking her. He could feel her begin to relax. “I got you. Shh.” He swept her into his arms.

“Where are you taking her?”

“Upstairs. She needs to rest. She’s always taking care of everyone else. She never lets anyone take care of her.”

Cordy lifted her tearstained face. “Stop talking about me like I’m not here.”

“No fighting me. Your family is fine. You are going upstairs. You’re going to take a long hot bubble bath followed by a nap.”

“If my sweet evil vampire insists, who am I to argue?”

“I’m going to remember you said that.”

“Is there anything I can do for you?”

“I’ll be fine, Spike. Why don’t you give Wesley a hand. Feel free to torment him. It’s been forever since I teased him. He must be feeling neglected.”

“We wouldn’t want that. I’ll do my best.”

Angelus placed her on the bed. “I’ll get your bath ready while you get undressed.” He didn’t wait for an answer.

Cordelia looked down at her clothes. She shook off her thoughts and quickly undressed being careful not to look at her naked body.

When he returned, he found her curled up on the bed. She was hugging her knees with her ankles crossed. “It’s ready.”

She rested her chin on her knees. “Thanks” She didn’t move.

“Come on. You don’t want the water to get cold.” He picked her up and carried her into the bathroom. He set her on her feet. “In you go.”

She stepped into the hot bubbly water and sat down. Hazel eyes locked with brown. “Aren’t you going to join me?”

“No. You just relax. I’ll be right outside the door.”

Angelus lay down on the bed. He willed his body to relax. Seeing her naked form had him at the ready. He knew sex was the last thing Cordy would want. Comforting someone went against his nature. He found himself asking what his soul would do. He was tempted to go ask Spike for advice. After all, he’d taken care of someone for over a century.

Granted insanity was hardly the same as being traumatized, but any advice was better than wandering in the dark. He closed his eyes and concentrated on Cordelia. He listened to the sound of her breathing, her heartbeat and the rippling of the water. The latter did nothing to help calm him. His eyes snapped open when he heard her begin to cry.

Cordelia jumped when the bathroom door flew open. She quickly wiped her tears away. “You so need a bell.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

“Yeah ’cause everybody cries when they’re fine.” Their eyes locked in a battle of wills.

She rolled her eyes. “It’s just…why didn’t you want to join me? Is it because..of last night?” Her tears started to flow unchecked. “You don’t want me anymore?” She curled up into a ball and rested her forehead on her knees.

“I can’t really blame you. I wouldn’t want me either.” Her head popped up at the sound of water splashing. She hadn’t heard Angelus undress but his naked body was suddenly in front of her. “Hey”

Angelus grabbed her by her waist. He pulled her toward him and turned her body to rest against his chest. “How can you think I don’t want you? I don’t want anyone but you.”

Cordy could feel him hard behind her. “You didn’t’re finally unchained and you haven’t..”

“Cor, you were just through a horrible ordeal. I figured you wouldn’t want me to try anything. Being sensitive to someone’s feelings isn’t exactly easy for me. I knew I couldn’t be naked with you and control myself. I don’t want to hurt you.”

She turned her head to stare into his eyes. “I want you to touch me. I want you to make me forget. I need you to love me and make me feel clean again.”

The first kiss was gentle. His lips lightly brushed hers. His tongue came out to taste her. Her lips parted and her tongue ventured out to meet his.

He broke the kiss. Her pants tickled his skin. Her eyes were starting to sparkle a bit. “Come to bed.” A smile bloomed across her face. He stood pulling her with him. They stepped out together. He grabbed a towel and slowly dried her off, taking his time to cup and tease her flesh. “You’re so beautiful.”

She snatched the towel from his hands and mimicked his movements until he too was dry. “You make me feel beautiful.” She tossed the towel on the floor.

Angelus leaned down to kiss the tip of her nose. He slid his hand in hers and led her to their bed. Once there, he swept her into his arms and layed her on the bed before crawling in beside her. “Are you sure?”

“I’m not made of glass.”

He smiled. “I love you.”

“Then show me.”

His mouth descended. He desperately wanted to possess this strong, beautiful, headstrong, loving woman. He needed to make her his.

Cordy was desperate for his touch. Being in his arms made the world fall away. She grabbed a hand and placed it on her breast. She groaned into his mouth as his hand came alive.

He shifted so he covered her. He began trailing kisses down her body. He lightly sucked on the healing bite mark adorning her breast before moving on to suckle at a nipple.

She threaded her fingers through his hair and pressed him to her flesh. The pull of his lips sent shock waves directly to her womb.

His mouth kissed a path to the neglected breast. He rolled her nipple with his tongue careful to give it the same attention. His hand slowly tickled its way down her stomach until reaching her heat. His fingers parted her swollen folds. He growled against her breast at her wetness. His mouth soon began the same journey his fingers took.

Cordy spread her legs further as he continued his descent. Her nails clawed at the sheets. She moaned when she felt the tip of his tongue circle her clit.

Angelus had missed her taste. It had been too long since she allowed him this pleasure. His tongue and blunt teeth worked together to devour her. Her muscles began to tense. Two fingers slipped inside her. He gently stroked her inner walls as his mouth latched onto the bundle of nerves. He sucked in time with his stroking fingers until she screamed her release.

She dragged him to her tasting herself in the kiss. Her hands explored the smooth hard planes of his back. She tried to roll him over but he pressed her into the mattress.

“It’s my turn to be on top.” He planted kisses along her jaw. “I need to be inside you.”

Cordy wrapped her legs around his hips. Her hand slipped between their bodies to grip his cock. She directed him to her slick opening. “What’re you waiting for? You’re invited in.”

He slammed in to the hilt in one solid stroke. “God Cor!” He took her lips in a hard kiss as he started thrusting.

Her hips rose to meet each thrust, her nails digging into his back. Angelus gripped her hip with one hand and the back of her neck with the other, controlling her movements. It was as if he were playing her like a musical instrument but instead of music he was creating fire. He increased his pace, stoking the fire into an inferno. Her entire body tensed in anticipation.

He knew she was close. It was as if he’d always known her body. The way she wanted to be touched seemed instinctual. His mind reminded him she was his. She had accepted his claim but unbidden, his fears returned. His Cordy had almost been claimed by another vampire. His fears slowly enveloped him. He felt his fangs elongate. “Mine!”

Cordy gasped as his fangs sank into her neck, forever marking her. Her body exploded into the strongest orgasm of her young life. It was as if every cell in her body exploded in ecstasy. She hadn’t known it was possible to experience such pleasure while your heart broke a little.

His release was intense. His fangs sunk deeper ensuring his mark would be permanent. His mouth filled with her blood. Reality struck. He had marked her even though she had asked him to wait. Angelus gently extracted his fangs and lifted his head. “I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me. It’s just I..”

“I know.” She cupped his cheek. “I understand and I don’t hate you.”

Angelus breathed a sigh of relief before returning to his mark carefully cleaning away the last few drops of blood. He rolled onto his back, slipping from her body. He finally felt truly sated. He tucked her into his side and kissed her forehead. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He hadn’t noticed the sparkle he saw return earlier had flickered out. He drifted off to sleep.

Cordelia touched her neck. She’d meant what she said. She understood why he’d done it and she didn’t hate him. She simply left out the rest. She quietly disentangled herself and climbed out of bed. As she dressed, she noticed the small smile that graced his lips as he slept.

Spike was reading in the office when he spotted Cordelia in the doorway. “I thought you were taking a nap?”

“Too much on my mind. Where’s Wes?”

“He went to some book store. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Last night?” He nodded. “Not really.”

Spike had noticed her scent but didn’t think anything of it until he spotted the bite on her neck. “I’ll stake him!”

She reached up and touched the mark. She blocked Spike’s path. “Don’t”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m not sure.”

“How much blood did he take? Maybe we should get some food in you?”

“Don’t worry. He didn’t take much. Physically I’m fine. I just..”

“Didn’t want him to drink from you there. Did he tell you what it means?”

“I know what it means that’s why I told him I wanted to wait until we got his soul back.”

“And he did it anyway.”

“I told him the night we chained him up why I wanted to wait. He didn’t push. Then last night happened. I understand why he didn’t want to wait anymore. Besides, what’s the point of waiting? Angel’s gone. Angelus is all I have. He’s all I’ll ever have.” Her eyes filled with tears. “What am I going to do, Spike?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’ve been dealing because I knew we’d get him back. What am I supposed to do now?”

“You said you loved him.”

“I do but is that enough? How can I ask my family to endanger themselves by accepting a soulless vampire in their lives? He doesn’t even have a chip. What happens when they do something to piss him off? Do I take him on missions? He may enjoy killing whatever demon we face but what happens when he’s near a bleeding human victim? How long can he resist human blood flavored with fear? What happens the next time the scoobies come for a visit? How long do you think it’d be before he kills Xander or Giles? Don’t even get me started on what he’d do if he ever saw Buffy again. She sent him to hell.” She collapsed into a chair.

“Being with him felt right because it was temporary.” She looked into Spike’s eyes. “I miss my best friend, my champion. I miss Angel. This is killing me, Spike. I don’t know how much longer I can be strong.” She absently began stroking her new scar. “Angel once told me that a vampire will always turn on you. It’s in their nature. I know what my breaking point is. I’ve known for a long time. Being forced to stake the man I love would break me. I don’t know how Buffy got through it.”

“You aren’t alone.” Spike pulled her out of the chair and into his arms. “Lean on me.”

Cordelia wrapped her arms around him. Neither noticed a shadow move across the lobby and go down the basement stairs to the sewer entrance. “Thanks. I think I just needed to hear myself say it.”

“What are you going to do?”

“What can I do? I love him.”

“Then it’s not hopeless.”

“What do you mean?”

“He loves you. Given time, I think he’ll do the right thing and get his soul back himself.”

“Do you really believe he’d do that for me?”

“Right now he believes he can be what you need. He’ll figure it out. He’s not as stupid as he looks.”

The corners of her mouth twitched. “Thank you for being here, Spike. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Her words made him feel as if he could finally breathe again. If he needed to at any rate.

Cordy read the turmoil in his eyes. She cupped his face. “You did not fail me. You’ve helped me stay sane.”

“You’ll get through this. I’m not going anywhere.”

“You have a life to get back to. I can’t ask you to..”

“You didn’t ask. I offered. Actually I’m telling you. I’m not going anywhere.”

Part 8

Angelus had spent the night watching Cordelia sleep. Every time her face scrunched up, he would stroke her cheek and whisper in her ear until her frown disappeared. He was amazed that his voice made her feel safe. She was actually comforted by his presence.

Cordelia drifted into wakefulness. She had fought to stay awake. She’d been afraid to dream. She knew the nightmares would come. She feared that in her sleep no one would save her. This time she would be raped. This time her body would be used by both vampires while her family watched helplessly.

She would be bitten. She would be forever marked and not by the vampire she loved more than her own life. Each time the nightmare began and she began to despair, Angelus would appear. His voice filled her head and she knew she was safe.

Angelus felt her snuggle into his arms. His grip instinctively tightened.

Her eyes opened to discover brown eyes watching her intently. “Did you sleep at all?”

“Wasn’t tired.”

She smiled at him. “You were protecting me from my nightmares.” She stroked his cheek. “I love you.”

He leaned into her touch. “I’ll always protect you.”

“My vamp protector. I hate to be the one to tell you but you kinda suck at being evil.”

“Ouch. Just kick a vampire when he’s down. It’s all your fault. You’re a terrible influence on me.”

“I’m so sorry.”

He smiled at her grinning face. “I can tell.” His smile faded. “Are you okay?”

She looked into his eyes. She didn’t understand how a vampire without a soul could look at her with such love and concern. It took her breath away.

“I’m okay.” He gave her a skeptical look. “I am. I have you and I have my family.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For blaming Spike when it’s really my fault. Wolfram and Hart were after you because of me.”

“It’s not your fault. Playing the blame game is a waste of time. Yeah. Wolfram and Hart tried to go through me to get to you. It wasn’t the first time and it probably won’t be the last. I could run and hide, but I won’t. I need you in my life and I plan to fight for us. If you insist on playing the blame game over last night then I have to point out that Lilah hated me because of my actions.

It never occurred to me that she might actually care about Wesley when I tossed her out on her ass. She must’ve considering how angry she was at his rejection. Which brings us to Wesley choosing to get involved with a known enemy. Of course if it hadn’t been for Fred choosing Gunn over Wesley then he might not have been so secretive and betrayed our family. Then again if I hadn’t gone away with Groo, I would’ve noticed Wesley’s strange behavior and made him talk to me.”

“That’s an excellent point. It’s all Groo’s fault.”

“I’m glad we straightened that out. Now we should..”

Angelus couldn’t wait any longer. “Are you going to chain me up again?”

She thought about it. “No. I’m going to trust you to keep me and our family safe.” Their eyes locked. “I’m going to trust you not to leave the hotel. I’m trusting you not to hurt anyone and that includes mind games.”

“How about I protect you and Spike can take care of the others?”

The sparkle in her eyes dimmed a little. “I need you to tell me I’m not crazy for trusting you.”

“I think you’re insane for trusting me. No one has ever trusted me to do anything but…I’ve never given anyone reason to trust me.” He cupped her face. “I’m going to do everything I can not to let you down. I don’t want to hurt you. I can’t lose you. I love you.”

“We’ll get through this. We should get dressed. I want to check on everyone. Wesley, Gunn and Spike are probably fighting over which one let me down the most.” She sighed.

“Are you sure you’re up for it?”

“My family is my strength. Let’s go.”

“If I hadn’t gotten involved with Lilah, none of this would have happened.”

“Wesley, you heard her. Wolfram and Hart were after her because of her relationship with Angel..Angelus. It wasn’t about you.”

“She said it wasn’t about me anymore. The first attack was and that was why Angelus had to rescue her the first time. If he hadn’t needed to do that, they might not have known she was a threat to their plans.”

“Lilah also said they had psychics reading him so they still would’ve known. They still would’ve come after her.”

“Yes but Lilah was especially vicious because of me.”

“She was vicious because she was an evil psychotic bitch.”

“No! It wasn’t your fault.”

“My girl’s right. It was my fault she was almost..”

“C’mon English. You’re the brains and I’m the muscle. I should’ve done a better job of protecting her. There I was, arms tied behind my back and gagged. I was completely useless. I was the one they were gonna shoot if she didn’t..if she didn’t…I failed..again.”

Gunn was exhausted. He hadn’t slept. He’d been plagued with nightmares of Alonna and Cordelia. They needed him and he kept failing them over and over.

“Gunn, that’s ludicrous. They had guns. We were all there. There was nothing you could have done.”

“We weren’t all there. I was too busy buying liquor to save my friend from being victimized. This was my fault. I came here to keep her safe. She even deactivated my chip so I could handle the evil lawyers. She trusted me and I repaid her by not being here when she needed me the most.”

“Stop it all of you! None of you are to blame for what happened here last night.”

“I couldn’t have said it any better myself.”

Everyone turned at the sound of Cordelia’s voice. She came down the stairs holding Angelus’s hand.

“Don’t Wes. It wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t Gunn’s fault. It wasn’t Spike’s fault. It wasn’t Angel’s fault and it wasn’t Angelus’s fault. This is where the blame game officially ends.”

Angelus turned her to face him. “You forgot one. It wasn’t your fault either.” She nodded. “Say it.”

“It wasn’t my fault either.”

“How are you, Sweetie?”

“I have my family Lorne and I can handle anything when I have all of you. How’s your head?”

“Still hard as rock. I’m getting used to being knocked out. I may have to have Mr. Leather Pants train me.” He gave Angelus a wink.

Angelus stifled his growl since the green demon made his Cordy laugh. It was the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard.

“I would so pay money to see that.” She patted Angelus on the behind. “I’m sure you guys could teach each other a few moves.” She dragged her glowering vampire to the red couch. “So what’s for breakfast. I’m starving.”

“Do you want me to make you an omelet?”

“That sounds yummy. What about you guys?”

They stared at Cordy perched on the vampire’s lap. They could almost believe he was Angel. Almost.

“Sounds good.” Fred was happily bouncing at the thought of eggs a la vampire. “Do we have enough eggs?”

“Yeah. I went shopping a few days ago. We’ve been a little too busy to eat any of it.” Cordy looked over at the sullen blond vampire. “Spike?”

“Yes, Luv?”

“Are you going to join us for breakfast?”

Spike hesitated. He was still dealing with his guilt.

“Yes. He is.”

He looked at his sire and nodded.

“Good” She grabbed Angelus’s hand and started dragging him to the kitchen. “Guys, give us a five minute head start.”

Cordelia remained silent until they entered the kitchen. “Why is Spike being so submissive? He’s never been like that before. He was insolent from the moment he was turned.”

He considered lying to her but decided against it. “This is the first time he’s ever truly been sorry for failing me. It’s his way of showing me he’s sorry.”

“Cor, you can’t order him to stop feeling like he let you down. He regrets not being here and he should.”

“Please don’t alienate him. I need my family. Please?”

He looked into her pleading hazel eyes. *I am a cold-hearted evil vampire. I am a cold-hearted evil….dammit!* “I’ll talk to him after breakfast, okay?”

“Thank you”

Breakfast was spent in relative silence. After everyone except Angelus finished their eggs, Angelus invited Spike to workout with him in the basement.

Wesley watched the two vampires leave. He volunteered to help Cordelia with the dishes. He waited until Fred, Gunn and Lorne left to broach the subject. “We need to talk about last night.”

“It’s over Wes. I don’t want to talk about it.”

“I won’t push you but we do need to talk about what Lilah said. About the curse.”

“I spoke to Giles. The Counsel received a report about an entire Romany clan being wiped out. Wolfram and Hart even killed their spouses though technically they aren’t blood relations.”

“I figured she was telling the truth. All those poor people dead, for what?”

“To bring Angelus out permanently and it worked. Cordelia, Angel may be gone for good. We can’t curse him with his soul.”

Cordelia felt her tears start to flow. “I know.”

“What do you want us to do?”

“I don’t know, Wes.” Her tear stained face turned away. “I don’t want to be the boss anymore. Tell me what I should do. Please?”

“I wish I knew. I feared his return. I threw my life away because of that fear.” He gave a bitter laugh. “Last night I actually told Spike to leave you alone. I told him Angelus would take care of you. I, a former Watcher, assured William the Bloody, souled vampire and killer of two slayers, you would be safe with one of the most feared vampires in all of history.” He began pacing.

“I was beyond happy to see Angelus grab Lilah. I watched him kill a human being and I felt relieved. Our sweet Fred opened up a portal. We watched Lilah’s body be sucked in along with her two lackeys, who were both still alive.” He sighed. “I found out this morning that the men I had watching the building are all dead.”

“Wes, I’m so sorry.”

“This whole situation is insane. Angelus is acting more human than the humans, well lawyers at any rate. The plan has always been to do our best to retrieve Angel’s soul but not to hesitate to stake him if need be. Look at us now. We just ate a breakfast prepared by Angelus. The whole plan hinged on his soulless self trying to kill us.”

He sank into a chair. “Life would be a lot less complicated if he stuck to the plan.”

“Scary but true. So now what?”

“Well, we don’t give up yet. Angelus seems to genuinely care for you.”

“We keep searching. Giles is trying to find anyone Wolfram and Hart may have missed. I want Fred and Gunn to return to your apartment and continue researching. Lorne can go through his contacts again. I want you or Spike to remain with Angelus at all times. I won’t ask you to chain him up again.”

“Wes, we need to face..”

“Cordy, what other choice do we have. We have to keep trying.”

“We will.” She knew Wes wasn’t ready to face the hard questions yet. She could barely ask herself. *If Angel is really gone forever, what do we do with Angelus? Can he become an accepted and trusted member of the team or do we stake him?*

Angelus studied the sullen vampire. He took an unnecessary breath. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“I should have been here.”

“Yes. You should’ve but Lilah wasn’t after her because of you. They wanted to hurt me by hurting her. She doesn’t blame you….and neither do I.”

“You don’t?”

“No. It’s over for now and she’s fine. They will probably take time to regroup but they’ll come after her again.”

“I won’t be more than 100 feet from her.”

“What happened to us, Spike?”

“How do you mean?”

“We once terrorized most of Europe. We instilled the kind of fear I saw in Cordy’s eyes last night in so many of our victims. I wanted to tear those vamps apart with my bare hands for doing something we’ve both taken pleasure in doing.”

“I know”

“Smelling her fear last night made me sick. I stayed awake all night so I could keep her safe from her nightmares. I have never made anyone feel safe before. I’ve never wanted to.” He went over and started working the bag. “I don’t have a soul anymore but when I look into her beautiful trusting eyes, I don’t want to be a monster anymore.”

“I never told you why I got my soul, did I?”

“So you’d be worthy of slu..Buffy.”

“That’s true but I never told you what I did.” Spike held the bag for him. “She and I had such an unhealthy relationship. After she came back, she was so cut off. She said I made her feel again and she made me feel like a man.”

“So what went wrong?”

“I wasn’t a very good man. I thought the only way I could keep her was if I convinced her to stay in the darkness with me. Eventually she remembered she didn’t belong there and ended it. She told me being with me was killing her. She said she never loved me.”

“And I know how well you take rejection.”

“Yeah. I was convinced she was lying to herself and to me. When we were together, she loved me. I thought if I could be inside her again, she wouldn’t be able to deny it anymore.”

Angelus froze mid-punch. “You raped her?”

“I tried to. At the time, I didn’t see it that way. She always said no before we had sex. Except for that first time. We were fighting one second. The next she was kissing me. She had me unzipped, loose and inside her before I knew what was happening.” Spike began pacing.

“After she managed to push me away, I finally realized she meant no this time. I saw the look of horror on her face, that familiar look. For the first time in my unlife, I truly hated myself. I didn’t want to be a monster anymore. I left for Africa that very night.”

Spike turned to face Angelus. “You could face the trial. Cordy and I would go with you.”

“I would never hurt Cordy like that. We are going to get through this together. I’m already earning her trust. Even the others are giving me a chance. It’s all gonna work out.”

“Angelus, they need a champion. Your family is used to rolling with the punches. They’re making due ’cause you’re not trying to kill them. This can’t work forever. Don’t wait until you’ve almost destroyed the woman you love before you finally wake up and smell reality.”

“We’re fine and we’ll stay fine.”

Part 7

Cordelia walked into the Hyperion. She was about to shout her greeting when she spotted Lorne tied to the red couch. He appeared to be unconscious.

She raced to his side and checked his pulse. It was strong and steady..for a Pylean.

“Welcome to the party, Miss Chase.”

Cordelia’s stomach clenched at the sound of Lilah’s voice. She rose to her feet and turned to face the evil lawyer who’d ordered her dissected. She gasped. “Fred!”

Lilah tightened her grip on the Texan’s hair, a gun aimed at her temple. “I thought you’d never get here.”

Wesley and Gunn exited the office. Their hands were bound behind them but only Gunn was gagged. Each man was being pushed forward by the barrel of a gun.

Cordelia looked at her family then at the people holding them hostage.

“We can’t have a party without the guest of honor.”

Cordy glanced up the stairs.

“Don’t worry. Your vampire’s still upstairs. We haven’t gone near him.”

“What do you want, Lilah?”

“To make you suffer.”

“Please don’t do this Lilah. I’m the one who hurt you. Leave Cordy alone. I’ll do anything.”

“Sorry Wes but it isn’t just about you anymore. We’ve gone way past that. This little bitch is interfering with our plans for Angelus. We’ve been sitting on that soul removal spell for almost a year. We couldn’t risk performing it until we were certain he couldn’t be recursed.”

“What?” It was as he feared but hearing the words spoken was still a shock.

“Sorry Wes ol’ boy but Angel’s gone for good. The only way our spell could be counteracted is for the spell caster or one of her line to revoke it. Twenty minutes after it was cast, the gypsy was killed. Ten minutes after that her entire clan was wiped out. Do you have any idea how expensive it is to have 227 people killed when they’re scattered across the globe?”

Cordelia felt sick. All those people dead. “You’re insane.”

“No. Just thorough. We wanted Angelus around permanently.”

“Mission accomplished. So why are you after me?”

“I admit at first it was because of Wesley. I accepted him loving her.” She yanked hard on Fred’s hair. “But I wasn’t..he just let you..” She shook her head to clear her thoughts.

“After your rescue, I was prepared to let it go. I had more important things to worry about. Thanks to your boyfriend I had to answer to the Senior Partners. They weren’t very happy and Gavin wasn’t around to assume the blame.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“You will be.”

As if appearing from nowhere, Cordelia was grabbed by two vampires.

“Our resident psychics have made a shocking discovery. It seems the Scourge of Europe, the one who WE released, had gone and fallen in love. He is actually considering joining the good fight so he can win the trust of his lady love. That may make for good television but we can’t allow that to happen.”

Cordy struggled against her captors. “If you think killing me will..”

“Who said anything about killing you?”

Now she was really scared. *Spike, where are you?*

“No. Killing you would focus his rage solely at us. What good would that do?”

“None. So why don’t you..”

“Let’s play a game. I’ll make up a scenario and you can guess the outcome. It’ll be fun.” She took a deep breath for a dramatic pause. “Ready? Picture this. Angelus discovers his lady love has been raped and marked by two local vampire leaders while your family watched. Now it’s your turn. What do you think he’ll do?”

“If you think..”

“You could use your powers to save yourself but you’ll be killing your family.”

Lilah’s henchmen forced Gunn and Wesley to their knees.

Cordelia looked into Fred’s terrified eyes. “What do you think this will accomplish?”

“I’m not entirely sure. We haven’t been doing a very good job of predicting Angelus’s behavior thus far. We’ve accepted that he isn’t going to work for us but we cannot allow him to join your team either. As long as he’s killing innocent people and creating mayhem, we’ll be content.” She dragged Fred with her as crossed the room to stand closer to Cordelia.

“I’m guessing that Angelus will be furious when he finds out. He’ll want to kill me but I’ll already be gone. I’m transferring to a branch office. He’ll have to focus his rage elsewhere.” She looked over at Gunn and Wesley.

“I don’t think he’ll want to fight side by side with men who watched his lover be so violated. I mean if it weren’t for them, you would have saved yourself. I predict you’ll never be a big happy family.”

“You sick fucking..”

“Such language from a lady. Let’s get on with this before the blond vampire returns.”

“I thought you said he wasn’t a danger?”

“He can’t hurt me but you’re a vampire. You he can kill.”

“Cordy don’t do this. Save yourself. Please!”

“I don’t have any choice, Wes.” The vampires released her arms. She began unbuttoning her blouse.

“No. You misunderstand. It will be much more entertaining if you struggle but at the first sign of any glowing, you say goodbye to your friend Charles Gunn.”

Cordelia wanted to kill Lilah with her bare hands. She knew she had to play Lilah’s sick game. She only hoped her fighting skills would buy enough time until Spike returned. Her eyes closed for a second. When they opened, her elbow came up and slammed into the vampire on her right.

The fight began. The two vampires tackled her to the ground. She was no match for their combined strength. With no weapons, she found herself quickly pinned to the floor. One vampire kneeled behind her head holding her arms down. The other straddled her waist trapping her lower body.

Her blouse was torn open and her bra ripped to shreds exposing her breasts. She closed her eyes and waited for it to be over. She wouldn’t give Lilah the satisfaction of hearing her scream.

“Someone’s been naughty. There’s a vampire bite on my property.”

“On our property, brother.”

“Sorry Sam. Our property.”

“You’re forgiven Tom.”

“Get on with it!”

Cordelia felt her pants being torn open and roughly pulled off. She tried to kick him away.

Tom caught her foot and spread her legs. “Feisty, isn’t she?” He ripped her panties off. “But she has the prettiest cunt.”

“She’s got a great rack too.”

“Do you mind if I go first?”

“Go ahead. I want to enjoy her ass. I bet she’s still a virgin there.”

Tom shoved her legs up slightly. “I think you’re right. Wanna switch?”

“No way. I already called it.”

Cordelia tried to control her powers. Her abilities were instinctual when it came to self-preservation. She was almost grateful to have something to concentrate on. Her entire body flinched at the sound of a zipper.

The vampire released his erection. “Oh baby do I have a nice surprise for you.”

“Get the fuck away from her!”

Lilah screamed in pain as Angelus crushed her hand. The gun fell to the floor. Fred twisted herself free.

Angelus wrapped his free hand around Lilah’s throat. “Tell the men to drop their weapons.”

She struggled to get her words out. “Drop them”

The men dropped their guns and stepped back. Fred slid a knife across the floor. Gunn picked it up and cut Wes loose.

The vampires watched the men set each other free. “If we’re about to be dusted, I’m going out fucking.” He ignored Angelus’s growl and positioned himself at her opening. He was about to thrust when an arrow pierced his chest.

Sam watched his brother explode into dust. He looked over at the brunette reloading her crossbow. The now released men picked up the discarded weapons and proceeded to knock the henchmen unconscious.

Angelus still had the lawyer by the throat but his enraged eyes were staring at him. He looked down at the sobbing naked girl. His mind made up, he turned and ran. He just made it to the door when the arrow struck. “Fuck!”

Fred dropped the crossbow and scurried over to her friend. Wesley tossed her a throw blanket.

Angelus wrenched Lilah’s head to the side. “You have got to be the stupidest bitch on the face of the planet. You deserve the most painful death I can devise.” He glanced at Cordelia. She had curled into a ball. Her sobs were tearing his heart apart.

“But it’s your lucky day. I don’t have time to waste on you.” He turned her to face him. “We’ll meet again. Send Gavin my best.” He twisted her head a full 180 degrees. The snap echoed through the lobby.

Fred backed away as Angelus approached Cordy. She remained quiet as the soulless vampire gently lifted the trembling woman into his arms. Fred absently noticed his bloodied wrists.

Wesley and Gunn silently watched Angelus carry Cordelia up the stairs, whispering in her ear as they went.

Once they disappeared the events of the evening finally caught up with him. Wesley’s legs gave out. He dropped to his knees. “Oh god”

Gunn moved across the room and pulled Fred into his arms. She buried her face into his chest. “It’s over now.” He glanced up the stairs. “What do we do now?”

“We need to dispose of the bodies. They’re human so we can’t just dump them somewhere.”

“The incinerator?”

“Not hot enough. Their bones won’t burn.”

Fred took a few deep breaths. “I know what to do. Everybody hold onto something bolted to the floor.”

Wes and Gunn, knowing what she planned to do, moved behind the counter. Fred stood on the stairs close to Lilah’s body and held onto the banister. “hrtmph vrkslx tfjbwn kzsgcp”

A portal opened in the floor. Lilah and her two henchmen were sucked into the red swirling whole.

“What the bloody hell is going on here?” Spike was in the doorway clutching a brown paper bag.

“Just getting rid of some garbage. You’d know that if you’d been here.”

“I don’t know if you noticed but they were human. Two of them were still alive.”

“Not for long. Nothing human can survive in the Quod Animo Fingi Non Potest Dimension. It’s a pity Lilah wasn’t still alive. Her death was too quick.”

Spike stared at the brunette. “The lawyer? Who killed her?”

“He’s loose? Where’s Cordy?”

“They’re upstairs. I never thought I’d ever be happy to see Angelus but then I never thought I’d know a human being that made Angelus seem like a choir boy.”

“I don’t know how the vamp got loose but..” Gunn picked up the coffee mug sitting on the counter and threw it against the wall. “All those fucking lawyers need to pay!”

Wesley looked over at where Cordelia had been. “I have never felt so helpless.”

“Will someone please tell me what the fuck happened here?”

Wesley’s haunted eyes locked with Spike’s. “Lilah showed up shortly after you and Cordelia left. She brought two armed men and two vampires with her. She used us to force…Cordelia to allow herself to be..raped and marked by the vampires.”

Spike fell back on the steps. The bag slipped from his hands. “Oh god”

“Fortunately Angelus managed to get loose. He grabbed Lilah right as… if he’d..” He closed his eyes trying to stop the images from replaying in his mind. “Fred dusted the vampires. Gunn and I knocked the gunmen out. Angelus snapped Lilah’s neck then he took Cordy upstairs. Fred was kind enough to dispose of the bodies.”

“How was she?”

“She was pinned to the floor by two vampires. Her clothes were ripped off her body. She had to listen to those fucking monsters politely discuss who got to fuck her where. She’d been a second away from being…penetrated when her family finally managed to help her. How the fuck do you think she is? Where are you going?”

“I have to see her.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Angelus will undoubtedly be feeling extremely protective. She’s in no condition to stop him from killing you right now. He was denied the pleasure of killing those vampires or taking his time in killing Lilah. I believe he’s proven he won’t hurt Cordelia. It’s best we leave them alone for now.”

“I have to see her.”

Spike listened at the door. He could hear her crying. His mind flashed back to that horrible night in Buffy’s bathroom. He promised to protect Cordy. He failed. Spike knocked on the door.

“Go away!”

“It’s me Sire. May I enter?” He waited for permission.

“Come in”

Spike walked in. Cordelia was curled into Angelus’s side. Her body appeared to be naked under the small blanket she was clutching. He lowered his eyes. “I’m sorry Sire.”

“You failed me, boy. Where were you? I trusted you to protect Cordy.”

“Forgive me Sire. I…I went to the liquor store after we killed the demon.”

Angelus growled. “Get out and don’t come back!”

Spike turned to leave.

Spike froze at Cordelia’s soft plea. He heard her sniffling but didn’t look at her.

“No. It wasn’t his fault.”

“He was supposed..”

“It wasn’t his fault.” She tried to control her tears. “No member of our family is to blame for Lilah’s actions. Look at me Spike.” She sighed when he shook his head. “Look at me.”

He lifted his head. Her eyes were swollen and red. He could see some scratches and finger shaped bruises on her arms and shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Luv. I should have been here for you.”

“You couldn’t have known. I didn’t. It’s not your fault. I don’t blame you.” She nudged Angelus. “Tell him it’s not his fault.”

“Fine!” She extracted herself from his arms. “But if you let this tear our family apart then Lilah wins!” She tightened her grip on the blanket. “I need to take a shower.”

Angelus watched his lover storm off. He was glad the trauma hadn’t extinguished her spark. “Spike..”

“I’m sorry. I should have been here.”

“It’s nice to know it only took my girl being nearly raped for you to figure that out.”

“I’ll go”

“No” He stood up. “Cordelia wants you here. She’s been through enough so you’re staying. Go downstairs. No one comes up here but you. She’ll be down when she’s ready.”

“Yes Sire”

“Don’t fail me again!”

“I won’t.”

Angelus waited for Spike to leave before opening the bathroom door. The small room was filled with steam. “Cor?” He pulled the curtain open. She was curled up, her skin raw from the scalding water. He quickly adjusted the temperature. Still clothed, he stepped under the spray and gathered her in his arms.

“I can’t get clean.”

“You were never dirty.”

“But they..they..” She burst into tears. “I’m so sorry.”

“Shh. You have nothing to apologize for. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Please don’t blame our family. I need them. I need you.”

“You have them. You have me. Nobody’s leaving. Spike is downstairs. I told him to keep everyone away until you’re ready to come down.”

“You don’t hate me for letting them..”

“I could never hate you.” He lifted her chin so he could see her eyes. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him close. “Thank you for saving me. Again.”

“I couldn’t have done it without you.”

“I think your blood made me stronger. I started to struggle when I smelled Lilah enter the hotel. When your scent returned, I ripped the chains apart. I shouldn’t have been strong enough to do that. I had those chains specifically designed to hold me.” He stroked her cheek with his thumb. “I would have chewed my hand off to get to you.”

“Nice imagery.”

“That sounds more like my girl.”

Her eyes filled with tears. “I still feel dirty.”

He picked up a washcloth and her body wash. “I may not be a ghost but let’s see what I can do.”

She felt a smile threaten to form. “I won’t tell Dennis if you don’t.”

“That ghost needs to go into the light.”

Her smile wouldn’t be denied as Angelus gently scrubbed her body.

He did his best to control his desires for the beautiful woman he was bathing. He knew sex was the last thing she needed right now. He was glad his pants covered his erection.

Her eyes drifted shut. His attentions made her feel clean. She rested her forehead against his chest. “Why are you so good to me?”

“Because you’re mine. Mine to love. Mine to protect. I would do anything for you.” He picked up the hand-held nozzle and rinsed her off. “All clean”

Cordelia cupped his cheek. “Thanks to you.” She leaned in and gently placed her lips on his for a chaste kiss.

He smiled at her before turning the water off. He grabbed a towel and dried her off. “Go crawl under the covers. I’ll be there in a minute.”

Once he was alone, he stripped out of his wet clothes and dried off. He willed his body to calm down. Remembering his fear for Cordelia when he finally managed to get downstairs was all it took to squelch his desire. She needed to be held. She needed to feel safe.

Spike slowly descended the stairs. Fred was fussing over the now conscious Lorne. Gunn was digging through the weapons’ cabinet. Wesley was talking on the phone. “Nobody goes upstairs.”

They all silently nodded. In the last couple of days, Cordelia’s life and well being had been threatened and Angelus saved her every time. The vampire, soul or not, was her protector. They chose to be grateful.

They hadn’t saved her. They’d been her Achilles heel.

Part 6

Angelus woke up alone. He closed his eyes and concentrated. Her heartbeat was music to his ears. He waited for her to come out of the bathroom.

“Hey. Sleep well?”

“As well as a chained vampire could. The waking up part wasn’t so great.”

Her brow furrowed in concern. “Why?”

“I woke up alone. Why is that?”

“You’re getting better at the sweet talk.” She realized he was waiting for an answer. “We humans, even the semi-human ones, have this morning ritual we can’t avoid.” She rolled her eyes at his blank expression. “I had to pee.”

“Oh” He looked her over. “So what’s the plan for what’s left of today?”

“I have to go over my vision with Wesley. I left the drawing on his desk. We probably need to do a little research before Spike and I go kill it. Everyone’s still working on getting your soul back. Lorne’s chasing down some leads and Fred’s searching the net.”

“I still don’t like the idea of you going with Spike. It’s just one demon. He can handle it.”

“Maybe but I’d still feel better if he didn’t go alone. I’ll get the couple to safety while he fights…or vice versa. I’m pretty handy with a sword. I kicked both your butts, in case you forgot.”

“That doesn’t count. The soul was slowing me down.”

“Pfft. Like you wouldn’t have looked down my shirt if you’d been soulless.” She straddled his waist. Her fingers slipped under his shirt to explore his chest. “I still would have disarmed you.”

“Hand to hand is a lot more fun anyway.” He squirmed under her touch. “Let me come with you tonight.”

Her hands froze. “What?”

“I want to help.” She looked like a deer caught in headlights. “Please?”

“You want to help?” He nodded. “You want to kill the bad guy and save the couple?”

“If it keeps you safe, yes.”

The sincerity she saw in his eyes surprised her. “I know you want to keep me safe but I need you safe right here.”

“You still don’t trust me.” He looked away.

“To protect me? Absolutely. To stay in complete control of your instincts? The jury’s still out on that one.” She stroked his cheek. “You might be tempted..if you…I would have to..” She closed her eyes to block out her fears. A tear escaped to slide down her cheek. “Please don’t make..I know I promised you I would stake you but I..don’t make me live with that.”

“Shh Cor. I won’t. Just promise me you’ll be careful. I should have killed Lilah when I had the chance.” He growled. “Much as I hate to admit it, Spike is a good fighter. I know he’ll protect you with his life.” He gritted his teeth. “I really hate having to entrust him with you.”

“Afraid of bad karma, are we?”

“Something like that. You love me, right?”

“Of course. Why would you ask that?”

“Spike has a soul now. He..” She stopped his words with a kiss.

“I love you. Spike is my friend and family.” She looked deep into his eyes. “I’m in love with every part of you.” She mumbled against his lips. “Only you.”

He sucked on her bottom lip. “I love you. Please, I need you.”

She quickly unbuttoned his shirt. “What do you need?” She kissed a trail to his nipple. She gently worried it with her teeth before rolling it with her tongue. “Tell me what you need.” She lavished the same attention to his other nipple.

He was painfully hard. He did his best to thrust against her center, desperate for friction. “I need to be inside you.”

“Is that what you need?” She released his erection. With his pants pushed as low as possible, she took him into her mouth.

His hips bucked at the sudden sensation. “Cor!”

After a few strokes, she released him with a soft pop. “Is this what you need?” Her hand continued to stroke his weeping cock. She licked the few drops of precum that had formed.

He groaned in frustration. “I need to be inside you now.”

Cordy stood up on the bed still astride him. She pulled her tank top off and tossed it on the floor. Her pajama shorts and panties soon followed.

He looked up at her. Her dripping curls made his mouth water. He licked his lips. “Come closer.” She sat on his chest. He could feel her heat searing his flesh. “That’s not what I meant.”

She reached behind her and started stroking his length. “Tell me what you need.”

“God Cor! I need to fuck you.” He watched as she licked her lips. “Please!”

“I thought you’d never ask.” She shifted her hips until his cock brushed against her opening. She impaled herself in one quick movement. Her mouth swallowed his groan.

He desperately wanted to touch her. He matched her thrusts as best as he could.

Cordy spread her arms and entwined their fingers. Her pace increased. She purposely squeezed his cock with her inner muscles.

“Fuck!” His hips bucked wildly. “Do that again.” Her inner walls clenched making her already tight passageway tighter. He thrust up hard sending her crashing over the edge with a shriek.

She pulled his head to her breast. She felt his ridges form against her skin. He sank his fangs into her flesh. The moment her blood touched his tongue he exploded in long, hard spurts. She felt another orgasm wash over her.

Angelus gently extracted his fangs. He licked the reopened wound until it stopped bleeding.

Spike smirked when he heard Cordelia’s scream. He couldn’t help envying his grandsire a little. To be loved so completely must be an amazing thing. Not that he would know from personal experience. He could imagine it though.

“Spike, are you even listening to me?”

“What? Sorry mate. My mind wandered off. What were you sayin’?”

“I said it’s an exsul demon. It’s called that because this particular species was exiled from another dimension over three thousand years ago.”

“Fascinating. Really it is. How do I kill it?”

Wesley blew out a breath. Nobody appreciated the finer details. “Decapitation works best. I’ve prepared a potion for you. After you killed it, sprinkle it with this powder and recite this phrase. The demon should disintegrate.”

“That’s what I like. A demon who cleans up nice and easy.” He looked over the slip of paper Wes handed him. “ab igne ignem. What’s it mean?”

“Literally from fire, fire.”

“To quote our favorite girl, duh.”

“Basically it means as you sow, so shall you reap. Fitting.”

“Always hated latin.” He shoved the paper in his pocket. “Is that it?”

“Yes. There’s nothing remarkable about it. You and Cordelia shouldn’t have any problems killing it.” Wesley removed his glasses to rub the bridge of his nose. “Spike, is there any way to give a demon a soul other than a curse or by trial?”

“If there was, I would’ve done it myself. Passing the trial wasn’t easy. It was fuckin’ painful.”

“I was afraid of that. I spoke to Lorne and Fred. I even called Giles in England. Our only hope was cursing him and that failed.” He glanced us the stairs. “I’m afraid Angel may be gone for good.” He slid his glasses on. “Be sure to let me know how Cordelia takes the news.”

“Oh no. Don’t look at me. She needs her family right now.”

“I heard her call you family in this very room.”

“Nice try. It needs to be a group effort.”

“You’re right. I’ll call everyone in. We’ll discuss everything later tonight.”

“Are you givin’ up on him?”

Wesley’s shoulders slumped. “Not yet. We’ve been focusing on what we can do. We need to discuss…we need to find Lilah and torture her until she tells us exactly what they did. Maybe that will tell us how to recurse him.”

“Now you’re talkin’. I may be all soul havin’ now but nobody messes with my family and gets away with it.” Spike growled. “Don’t ever tell Angelus I said that.”

“Your secret’s safe with me.”

“So what are we waitin’ for? Let’s go get the bitch. I still have a few hours before I gotta go kill the exsul demon.”

“We have no idea where she is. I had a few associates check her apartment. It’s been cleared out. Wolfram and Hart is locked down. There is no way to sneak in right now. The whole place has a force field around it. I imagine the senior partners aren’t happy about the way things turned out. There’s a very good chance Lilah’s already dead. I have some people watching every exit. If she pokes her head out, we’ll know.”

“Have I told you lately how glad I am you’re back?”

Both men turned at the sound of Cordelia’s voice. “It’s been a few days at least.”

She kissed his cheek. “I’m really glad you’re back. The place wasn’t the same without you.”

Wesley blushed. “Thanks”

“So what’s the 411 on Mr. Slimy? Is it time to hit the books?”

“It’s an easy kill, Pet. Headless, potion, chant then poof.”

Wesley rolled his eyes. Leave it to the blond vampire to roll all the information he gave him into a few words. “It’s a little more..never mind. How is Angelus?”

“I’m sure he’s fine. It sounded like Cordy was takin’ real good care of him. Lucky bastard.”

Wesley coughed. He ignored the deep shade of red her face became. “If you’ll excuse me, I have a few phone calls to make.”

Cordelia waited for Wes to close the office door before hitting Spike.

“Ow! What the bloody hell was that for?”

“You keep your vampire hearing to yourself.”

“Don’t blame me ’cause you’re a screamer. Oww! Quit hittin’ me. Ow! Fine. Scream all you want. Although I’m surprised the watcher didn’t hear you as loud as you were. Owww! That fuckin’ hurt.”

“You’re such a baby.”

“Oh sure. The evil vampire upstairs gets shagged and the souled one gets abuse. You know it just isn’t bloody fair. You Sunnydale women are a confusin’ lot. The slayer shagged Angel but hated Angelus. She shagged me when I didn’t have a soul and now that I got one, for her I might add, she wants to take things slow. One kiss is all I get at the end of a date. You think I could convince Angelus to switch?”

She put her arm around his shoulders. “Sorry blondie. I think he’d probably rip your head off for asking.”

He rested his head on her shoulder. “True. How about I just borrow you for a few decades? Ow! I’m willing to settle for years. Weeks? Days? Hours?” He blocked her blows. “Fine. Forget I said anything. Geez can’t take a compliment.”

“You’re so bad Spike. We both know you’re in love with Buffy.”

“Do you think she can ever love me like you love Angel?”

“It’s not a matter of her ability to love you completely. She has a lot of fears to conquer. Give her time.”

“I will even if it kills me.”

“That’s the spirit.”

“It’s a pity you left Sunnydale. We might’ve been the ones to fall in love.”

“I was a total bitch back then.”

“And the slayer wasn’t?”

“If you have my memories, Luv, you know I speak the truth.”

“You weren’t exactly Mr-Nice-Guy back then.”

“True. I was evil and now I have a soul.”

“She doesn’t know how lucky she is.”

“It could have been you and me, Pet.”

She lowered her head. “No. If you’d fallen for me, you wouldn’t have gotten a soul.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because I’m not worth it.” She tried to blink back the tears.

“Are you crazy?” He could tell by her tears she was serious. “Cordelia, you are an amazing woman.”

“You are. You inspire a vampire to want to be a better man. Angelus is in love with you. Do you even know how unbelievable that is?”

“Thanks a lot”

“No. Not because of you. Angelus is..I never thought he was capable of love. The judge declared him free of humanity. Even Dru and I weren’t considered clean. In case you haven’t noticed, you’ve turned the Scourge of Europe into a fluffy puppy with bad teeth. No one has ever tamed him. No one’s ever come close. You did that.”

She tried to smile. “Thanks Spike”

He pulled her into a hug. He nuzzled her neck. “You’re inspiring me right now.”

She started giggling. “What would I do without you?”

“You’d be upstairs shaggin’.”

She kissed his cheek. “You’re so bad.”

“Bad to the bone, Luv.”

“Sorry I couldn’t find anything to help Angelcakes. Everyone said the same thing. The only way to give a demon a soul is a curse. The only way a demon can get itself one is by facing the trial.”

“Thanks for trying Lorne. I know you had to…make a sacrifice.”

“Don’t mention it. Ever.”

“I can’t believe there’s no other way.”

“There just isn’t a demand for something like this Fred.”

“The evil vamp hasn’t been actin’ like we expected so far. Maybe Barbie could convince him to face the trial.”

“He does seem to genuinely care for Cordelia but I highly doubt that would work. According to my research, the reward is your heart’s desire. I’m afraid what his might be.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Our only hope is discovering exactly what Wolfram and Hart did to prevent him from being recursed.”

“Perhaps I could be of assistance.” Lilah stood in the doorway. She was flanked by two armed men and two vampires. “I do so like being helpful.”

“ab igne ingnem” Spike and Cordelia watched as the headless corpse dissolved into a puddle of goo. “I love it when they do that.”

“Me too. It beats finding a place to dump the body. I hate it when we have to burn them in the hotel’s incinerator. The whole place stinks for days.”

“Sounds like fun. What say we go get a drink to celebrate a job well done?”

“No. I should get back.”

“He’s chained up. He won’t be goin’ anywhere. I think you could use a drink.”

“Pfft. I could use a whole bottle but I don’t want to make him worry.”

“Give the watcher a call. He can let bondage boy know you’ll be late.”

“I don’t want to put Wes through the trauma.”

“Angelus wouldn’t take that particular message very well. He’s already jealous about you and I handling a vision together.”

“Say it again.”

“The part where Angelus is jealous of me.”

“Yup. Now that you have a soul, he’s afraid you might steal me away from him.”

“Ahh. Being on this side of things feels pretty damn good. C’mon. Now we gotta go out. Let him suffer a bit.”

“I’ll be honest. Having some of your memories does tempt me to indulge you but I can’t.”

“I understand. How about I go get us a bottle? We’ll let him watch us drink it.”

“You’re on.”

Spike tossed her the keys to the Plymouth. “I’ll walk. Meet you back at the hotel.”

Part 5

“Spike, don’t you have someone else you could annoy?”

“Who’s more fun to annoy than you?”

“I thought you were going to be nice to Spike.”

“I’ve been nice. I’ve been downfuckingright pleasant and now I want to be alone with you.”

“You’re such a sweet talker.”

“C’mon Cor. Make Spike go away.”

“Well you have been awfully good.”

Angelus watched as her eyes glazed over. “Cor?”

Spike approached the bed. “Luv?”

Angelus growled. “Back off Spike. She isn’t your ‘Luv’.”

“What the hell’s wrong with her?”

“She’s having a vision.”

“But she’s not floating.”

“She doesn’t usually float. The one you saw was the last floaty one she’s had.”

“She can hear you. You could just ask me your questions.”

“We tried Luv but you zoned out.”

“What did you see?”

“Gee Peaches for a second there I almost thought you cared.”

“Shut up Spike! The vision?”

“A slimey demon was attacking a horny couple in the park.”

“Tomorrow night. Spike can you hand me that notepad on the table. I need to draw a picture of Mr. Slimy.”

“Sure” He tossed her the pad. “So what’s the plan?”

“Unless Wes says otherwise, you and I will go kill it.”

“Cordy, Gunn can go with Spike. You should stay here with me.”

“Pfft. I’ll be fine. I want Gunn to stay with Fred and Wes’ll be here if you need anything.”

“Why does Gunn need to stay with Fred? At least take him with you.”

“We don’t know if Wolfram and Hart is going to try anything else. I want him to protect Fred.”

“Why can’t Wes protect her? He finally grew a pair once he got in touch with his dark side.”

Cordelia hesitated. She didn’t want to lie. “Umm..I didn’t…I thought it..”

“You can say it. You didn’t want her anywhere near me.”

“Well you have been known to enjoy taunting people. I didn’t want her to get hurt. You’re her hero.”

“It’s okay. You’re right. I wouldn’t ‘ve resisted the opportunity.” He looked at her arched brow. “What? I think I should get credit for being honest.”

“Yeah Yeah” She kissed his cheek.

“If it’s just one demon, I can take care of it alone.”

“I’m sure you could but I think it’s best if we go together.”

Angelus shifted on the bed. He didn’t like the way Spike looked at his Cordelia. “Wolfram and Hart went after you. Lilah’s still out there. You should stay here. Impotent boy can’t protect you.”

“Actually Angelus has a point.”

“That hurts Pet.”

“I just meant that the evil lawyers are technically human. With your chip, you’ll be defenseless against them. I’d like to cleanse you of it, unless you have any objections.”

“Cleanse me?”

“Yes. You have a soul now. You don’t need to rely on your chip anymore.”

“Cor, maybe you shouldn’t. What would the Powers say about this?”

“Actually they wanted me to do it the last time he was here.”

“They did?”

“Yes. Working toward redemption is a choice you make every day. It’s not something you can let technology decide for you.”

Spike was speechless. He had given up on getting rid of his chip. He’d actually grown to be grateful for it. Without it, would it be more difficult to remain good. Angel had struggled with his demon. What would Buffy and the scoobies say? Would they trust him?

“Spike, you’re a good man. You don’t need the chip to curb your instincts. You’re a champion now.”

Spike took an unnecessary breath. “OK”

“Come here”

Angelus watched Cordelia cup Spike’s face. He forced his eyes to remain open as she began to glow. The light spread until it enveloped both of them. After a few moments, the light faded. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“Not you dumbass. I was asking Cordelia.”

Cordy laid down and snuggled into Angelus’ chest. “I’m okay.”

“Go away Spike.” Spike rolled his eyes. “Go bite Wesley.” Cordy smacked his chest. “What? He needs to test the chip.”

“It worked but if he wants to double check, you can ask Wes to help you.” She scrunched up her nose. “I better go with you. Wes will probably freak out.”

“No. The point was for Spike to leave US alone.”

She gave him a quick kiss. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Okay but come back alone.”

Spike pouted. “Grandpappy Angelus, don’t you love me anymore?”

Cordelia hooked an arm with Spike. “C’mon. Let’s go beat up Wesley.”

Angelus watched his love leave with his annoying grandchilde. He hated to admit it, even to himself but he was worried. He knew Cordelia and Spike were fond of each other. He’d been serious about Spike’s habit of falling for his women. He couldn’t lose Cordelia.

For the first time, he was afraid Spike might have the advantage. Spike had a soul. He didn’t. She trusted Spike to handle her vision. She chained him to his bed. She called Spike a champion. He was a monster. She might not have called him one but she knew it to be true.

She had Spike’s memories. How he’d quickly lost interest in Dru after he turned her until he saw how smitten Spike was. He enjoyed taking her just to torment the fledgling. He’d done it again in Sunnydale.

Spike had been loyal to Dru for over a hundred years. This was the first time his soulless self ever wanted to be with just one woman. She had no reason to trust him. How could he prove himself if he was chained up? He said he’d do anything for her but could he give control of his unlife to his soul..permanently?

“You did what?!”

“I deactivated his chip.”

“Well Wolfram and Hart is run by humans. The Powers wanted me too. He has a soul now. The road to redemption is a rocky path but it must be traveled without the aid of behavioral modification devices if it’s to have any meaning. Take your pick.”

“Very well. What do you need me to do?”

“Umm..let Spike hit you.”

Wesley gritted his teeth. “Fine”

Spike moved to punch him but opened his hand at the last moment. The slap connected. It brought a smile to Spike’s face. “Thanks mate. I can’t wait to see the whelp.”

“Oh c’mon. I won’t hurt him..much. He’s taken way too much pleasure in taunting me. You gotta let me scare him a little.”

“How is Xander?”

“He and Anya are giving it another go now that she’s human again. I still can’t believe she accepted his sorry ass apology. He had to be lying. He may be a moron but even he had to know he’d never turn into a complete tosser like his dad.”

“Unfortunately he is that kind of moron.” She glanced at Wesley. “Bad parenting has lead a lot of smart people to make very stupid decisions. They can make us doubt our self worth. They can make us feel weak.”

Wesley began cleaning his glasses. “Fathers especially.”

Spike cleared his throat. It was obvious that he was missing some backstory. “I’m feeling a little peckish. Could I have one of your special concoctions, Pet?”

“What about Angelus? I don’t think it would be a good idea to starve him. After being denied blood during his stay in the ocean, he is likely to become extremely violent. The chains should hold but he hasn’t really tried to free himself yet.”

“The watcher’s right. Although he might not take too kindly to drinking pig’s blood.”

Cordelia braced herself. “I already fed him.”

“The old sire must be in love if he didn’t spit it in your face.”

“Actually he liked it.”

Spike was about to laugh until he detected her elevated heart rate. “Tell me you didn’t.”

Cordelia carefully studied the floor. “Umm..didn’t what?”

“Don’t play dumb with me Pet.”

“I gave him some of my blood. It’s my blood so it’s my decision.”

“You did what?!”

“Calm down Wes.”

“Cordelia why would you let him feed off you? It wasn’t necessary.”

“I didn’t..exactly.”

Spike lifted her chin and examined her neck. “Was it when..”

Cordy smacked his hand away. “That’s none of your business.”

Wesley decided he didn’t want to know the details. “He obviously didn’t take very much so he should still be hungry. Perhaps we should..”

“It’s okay Wes. Apparently a little of my blood goes a long way.”

“Really? But you’re not even completely human.”

“I guess the blood of a higher being packs a bigger punch.”

“Luv, he may have been lying so you’d continue to…feed him.” He scratched his head searching for the right words. “Fear isn’t the only thing that makes blood taste better.”

“Guys it’s late. I haven’t slept in..forever. Angelus told me a little bit of my blood was enough. I think he was being honest. You don’t. There IS a solution.” She picked up the ceremonial dagger she used as a letter opener and sliced her finger open. Before Spike could utter a protest, she stuck her finger in his mouth. “Well?”

Spike grabbed her wrist to yank her hand away but the taste of her blood stopped him. His eyes closed as he savored her taste. It was unlike anything he’d ever experienced. Normally his demon would be thrashing for control desperate to drain the source but it wasn’t.

For once his demon felt content. Almost sated. The cut was small but deep. His mouth filled with blood before it stopped flowing. He pulled her hand away. “He’s not lying.”

Wesley looked skeptical. “Really?”

“Yeah. I only had a mouthful but I feel like I could go days without feeding again.”

“That’s what Angelus said. Plus, it didn’t make him especially violent.”

“My demon feels rather calm.”

“My blood’s like vampire chocolate.”

Spike snorted. “I’ve seen Buffy and Niblet eat chocolate and they never stop after one bite.”

“Neither does Cordelia.”

“Hey!” She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. So we’re agreed. Angelus will be fine with my blood.”

“I said we’re agreed. Now I’m going to sleep. We can discuss my vision in the morning..or afternoon.”

“It’ll keep. Spike, you remember where your room is, don’t you?”

“You mean the one I stayed in last time?”

“Yes. I fixed it up for you. I had hoped your next visit would be entirely social.”

“You fixed a room up for me?”

“Of course. You’re family. I told you you’re always welcome here.” Spike was speechless. “Wes, you should get some sleep too. It’s almost sunrise.”

“I was just about to call it a night. Fred and Gunn are sleeping at your apartment. Lorne called. One of his contacts agreed to make some calls in exchange…let’s just say he won’t be coming home tonight.”

“Now that’s what I call takin’ one for the team. How come nobody asks me for a sacrifice like that?”

“His friend is a Lemadro Demon.”

“Forget I said anything.” Spike held onto Cordelia’s arm. They watched Wesley head upstairs. “I wanted to give you a small piece of advice.”

“I don’t want to tell you what to do but..”

“Stop. Angelus isn’t going to drain me.”

“I agree.”

“You do?”

“Yes. I know he loves you.”

“Angelus told you that?”

“Yes and so did Angel.”

Tears gathered in her eyes. “Angel told you?”

Spike directed her to the red couch. “I’m not sure if I should tell you this but the last time I was here Angel told me his demon was in love with you.”

“Why didn’t he ever tell me that?”

“Because he was afraid.” He held up his hand to stop her from interrupting. “He was afraid of what he might do without his soul there to stop him.”

“But Angelus hasn’t..”

“Luv this may be hard to hear but he wasn’t wrong to be afraid.”

“He never expected you to love him so completely. He barely believed himself worthy of your love with a soul. You loving his demon as well never occurred to him. It’s not are a unique woman.”

She blushed.

“Having said that, I want to ask you a question. What do you think Angelus would have done if you’d said no?”

“I did say no.” She shrugged. “At first anyway. He was aggressive. Do you know why I wasn’t afraid?”

“Your super glowy powers?”

“Well yeah but also because he gave me the opportunity to say no.”

Spike arched a brow. “You mean he was gonna let you go?”

“No. Probably not but after he rescued me from the lawyers, he had me alone in a hotel room unconscious..”

“Not that I want to bring up unpleasant memories but we..”

“I know. You didn’t let me finish. I woke up fully dressed. Sex was the first thing on his mind but he still answered my questions. He let me call the hotel to check on our family. He ordered me a pizza.”

“He what?”

“He ordered me a pizza and a pint of ice cream. Like I said before, I’m not delusional. I am being cautious..mostly. You know Angelus better than most but even you don’t know how an Angelus in love will behave.”

“It was something I thought I’d never see.”

“Me neither but I’m willing to find out.”

“Then so am I, Luv. But if he tries to hurt you, I’ll stake him.”

“Good night Spike”

“Good night”

“One last thing. Don’t tell him you let me taste your blood.”

“Just trust me on this.”

She shrugged. “OK”

“Where have you been?”

“What took so long?”

“We were talking.”

“We as in you and Spike? Alone?”

“No. Wes was there too.”

“Is his chip really gone?”

“Where are you going?”

“To the bathroom if that’s okay with you?”

“I’ll be right back.”

Cordelia returned a few minutes later dressed for bed.

“What are you wearing?”

“You know I don’t remember you being this slow before. Oh wait. That’s right. You were pretty gullible. I tricked you with nothing but a cup of water.” She laughed at his growl. “I’m wearing my pajamas and before you ask it’s because I’m going to sleep.” She crawled onto the bed.

“I was hoping we..”

“No way. I haven’t slept for ages. I’m tired. Now go to sleep unless you’d rather I slept somewhere else.”

“No” He felt her snuggle closer. “I don’t suppose you’d consider unchaining me. It is a little uncomfortable to sleep like this.”

“You’ll survive. Good night.” She gave him a quick kiss before turning off the lights.

“Good night”

Part 4

“How goes the research Wes?”

“Nothing so far I’m afraid. There seem to be a number of ways to remove one’s soul but only two to get one. There just isn’t a demand for something like this. Let’s hope the curse works.”

“We have to do better than that. There must be some way besides a curse or by trial.”

“I just spoke with Fred. She’s come up empty so far.” He watched her frown deepen. “We’ll keep looking.”

“Did somebody order a witch?”

Spike swept Cordelia in a hug. “How are you, Pet?”

She clung to him. “I’m…okay. I knew you’d come.”

“Of course.” He pulled back. “Let’s talk in private, Luv” Spike lead her into the office and closed the door. “Did he hurt you?”

“Don’t lie to me. I can smell him on you.”

“What is it with you vampires and your sense of smell?”

“Don’t avoid the subject. Do the others know he raped you?”

“Woah! Back up. There was no rape. He was chained to the bed but I gave him the chance to say no.”

“Spike, I love him.”

“You love Angelus?”

“Out of everybody here, I expected you to understand. Angelus is a part of Angel and I love Angel completely.”

Spike was stunned. “Believe me I know all about reconciling the man with the monster but..”

“But nothing. I love Angel completely and by extension I love Angelus. I’m not delusional. I don’t plan to unchain him and give him the run of the place. I’m not planning our future together. I am going to do whatever it takes to get his soul back which brings me to my question. Where is Willow’s friend?”

“She’s in my car with the engine running.” At her raised brow he continued. “When we left Sunnydale, Angelus was still on the loose. She’s waiting outside ’til she’s sure he’s secure. Don’t blame her. The Whelp told her about what happened when the computer teacher planned to curse him.”

“Oh” She opened the door. “Go get her. He’s chained to his bed and the chains are enchanted so he’s secure. She and Wes can go over the spell together.”

“Red sent a few different spells along. She even wrote two herself. Hopefully one will work.”

“I hope. You go get her. I want to call to check on Lorne.”

“Chains are a good look for you.”

“What are you doing here Spike?”

“Did you think I wouldn’t come? I’ve been waitin’ to have a nice chat with you ever since you tried to suck the world into hell. Besides you asked me to come if your soul went bye bye.”

Angelus rolled his eyes. “Where’s Cordelia?”

“Said she needed to call Lorne. She’ll be up soon. I thought we should talk alone. Now that the soul’s gone, I don’t need to pull any punches.”

“As if you could ever beat me boy. You had to hide behind the slayer before. Couldn’t be man enough to take Dru back yourself. No. You had to make a deal with our mortal enemy.”

“It’s not my fault you were insane. One nut vampire I can handle but two is too much even for an amazing vamp like me.”

“Damn. Even you are starting to sound like the cheerleader. What is it about that girl?”

“Go away boy. Don’t you have a slayer’s boots to lick?”

“Sorry. I don’t take orders from you anymore.”

“Taking orders is all you’ve ever been good for. You’re the slayer’s lap dog now. Kinda ironic considering how eager you were for me to kill her.”

“That was before.”

“Before you fell in love or before the soul? You always were a fool Spike. Love’s admitted bitch. Look at yourself. You’re pathetic. You got a soul for a girl who will never love you.”

“Shut up!”

“Truth hurts, doesn’t it boy? Poor Spike. Always after my scraps. First Druscilla and now Slutty.”

“Shut your fuckin’ mouth!”

“C’mon boy. You wanted to talk. Admit it. I can smell her on you but not like you can smell Cordy. Even with a soul, she won’t love you. It’s sad really. You’ll never measure up to me.”

“She loved Angel not you.”

“I know. Dumb bitch never did understand.”

“It’s not an easy concept for human’s to get. Especially a slayer.”

“Cordy understands.”

“Well she ain’t exactly normal.”

“She’s special.”

“That she is but you know this can’t work, don’t you? It’s just a matter of time.”

“Shut the fuck up Spike!”

“Did I strike a nerve Angelus?”

“You’re just jealous. You’ve never had anyone love you like she loves me.”

Spike doubled over in laughter. “Never thought I’d live to see the day Grandpappy spouted off the virtues of love.”

“Laugh all you want Spike. I’ve found love and acceptance from an amazing woman. I’m not gonna let my past stop me from taking what’s mine to have. I don’t feel any shame about loving her.”

“What about your soul?”

“What about it? The spell won’t work and we both know there’s only one other way.”

“So do it.”

“Why should I? I’m gonna play nice.”

“Yeah. I can cooperate. I’m willing Killing evil things is still killing. I could adjust. If you could do it without a soul, I can.”

“Angelus, you’ve made pain your art. You’re just gonna stop. Is that it?”

“I have Cordy. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to keep her. She loves me and in time she’ll learn to trust me. We’ll be together. I don’t need a soul to get the girl.”

“Now who’s delusional? She can’t trust you. We may be old enough to control our instincts. We don’t have to be ruled by our hunger but you can’t stay in control all the time. You don’t have a chip to reinforce your control. Hell even with a soul, we’ve both wanted to kill the Whelp.”

“I can do it for Cordy.”

“What about the rest of your family? Answer me this. What will you do the next time the scoobies pay a visit? You remember Rupert, Cordy’s ex-lover. What will you do when he gives her a nice kiss hello? A man who’s touched her, tasted her, buried himself in her tight young body.”

Angelus vamped out. “Shut the fuck up boy!”

“Yeah. You’re the picture of control. You’re such an unbelievably lucky bastard. That amazing woman loves you completely. Do you have any idea what I’d give to have what you have?”

“Stay away from her. She’s mine.”

“Then be the man she needs. She doesn’t need a vampire. She needs a champion. You know what you have to do.”

“It’s eating you up, isn’t it? I’ll tell you what I’ll do for you. You can have Dru and Buffy all to yourself. I’m done with both.”

“They aren’t yours to give Angelus.”

“Aren’t they? We both know the only thing I had to do was snap my fingers and Dru would come running. You play the jilted lover so well that you forget she was mine first. I’ll always be her first choice. Buffy too. She may let you in her life. She may even let you fuck her but she’ll never love you. She’ll never accept what you are. You’ll never have what I have with Cordy.”

Both vampires turned to see the furious brunette standing in the doorway. “Cor, I..”

“Save it.” She walked over to Spike and grabbed both his hands. “You know Buffy’s issues aren’t really about you. Thanks to Mr-I’m-chained-to-my-bed she’s terrified to let anyone in. She’s faced so much loss in her life. She even keeps Dawn at arm’s length. You’ve become a good man. Don’t doubt that.”

“Thanks Pet.” Spike placed a soft kiss on her lips before pulling her into a hug. He gave a growling Angelus a wink over her shoulder. “I’ll go check on Melina.”

Angelus waited until the door closed. He wouldn’t give Spike the satisfaction. “How dare you let him kiss you!”

Cordelia straddled his waist. “You totally deserved that. You were being mean to him.”

“He’s used to it. I think he enjoys being a whipping boy. Why else would he stay with Slutty, the vampire layer?”

“Don’t call her that.”

“You don’t like her either.”

“We made peace. We’re..sorta friends.”

“The only people she calls friends are those who consider her the center of the universe and you know it. Her problems and opinions are the only ones that matter.”

She tried to stifle a laugh but it came out as a snort. “Let’s change the subject.”

“I have a better idea. Let’s not talk at all. Kiss me.”

“Pfft. Not when you’re being an asshole.”

“C’mon Cordy. The last time I was around Spike he hit me with a crow bar.”

“You totally deserved that too.”

“Hey! You’re my girlfriend. You’re supposed to be on my side.”

“Tough. I’m on the side that isn’t trying to suck the world into hell.”

“OK. I’ll give you that one. It was a stupid plan. The soul may have been in control but I was in hell too. Let me just say it was nothing like the brochures.” He twisted beneath the chains. “Kiss me.”

“Will you be nice to Spike?”

“He’s my childe. I don’t have to show him respect.”

“I thought Druscilla turned him?”

“She did but she was too insane to train him. That fell to me.”

“I remember.”

She huffed. “I told you the powers gave me some of his memories so I could help him.”

His horrified eyes locked with hers. “You never said I was in any of those memories.”

“I didn’t want you to get all broody.”

“Those fucking Powers should stay out of our business. They had no right!”

“Knowing what he went through when he was first turned helped me to understand him. Plus we work for the powers. We are their business.”

“I’m sorry for..what you saw.”

“Don’t apologize to me. He’s the one whose girlfriend you used to screw loud enough for him to hear. While we’re on the subject if you ever think about touching another woman alive or undead, you truly will be a eunuch right before you’re dust.”

“This from the woman who let Spike kiss her.”

She leaned down to capture his lips. “You deserved it.”

“You deserve…” Angelus tensed up.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t give you what you deserve.”

“I’m gonna find a way to get your soul back.”

“What if you can’t?”

“I don’t..I can’t…We will.”

“I could…face the trial. I mean if that’s what you truly want.”

“No. The reward isn’t about what you ask for.”

“It isn’t?”

“It grants you your heart’s desire.”

“I want to have a life with you as I am.”

“I know.” She rested her head on his chest. “We’ll find a way.”

“Can’t we give it a try?” He could feel her tears soak his shirt. “Don’t cry. I love you.”

“I love you too but you’re asking me to give up half the man I fell in love with. You may love me but do you love Wesley, Gunn or Fred? What about the mission? Your shanshu? I could never accept happiness at the expense of others.”

He closed his eyes in anguish. “So where’s the witch?”

“Hey Engish, where’s the witch?”

“She went home.”

“It worked? Thanks for callin’. We been..”

“It didn’t work.”

“I’m afraid all the spells were unsuccessful.”

“Then why did she leave? We gotta keep tryin’.”

“I’m glad to see you’ve come around.”

“That ain’t fair. I want Angel back too. Just not at the expense of human lives.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I’m just a little on edge. Melina tried several different spells and nothing. She attempted the original curse first. Willow wrote two spells and her coven provided one as well. The fifth was faxed to us by Mr Giles. He consulted a coven in England.”

“Five spells and no winner?”

“Exactly. It’s quite disheartening. Wolfram and Hart knew what they were doing. I don’t believe we’ll be able to curse him again.”

“You’re not givin’ up, are you?”

“Of course not. We will keep researching. There must be another way.”

“How’s Barbie?”

“She’s upset which is to be expected. She’s trying to remain positive.”

“Where is she?”

“Wes…what game is the evil vamp playin’?”

“What do you mean?”

“He left you alive. He rescued Cordy from the evil lawyers. He ordered her pizza and ice cream. I didn’t see any bite marks or bruises on her. You don’t think he might actually love her, do you?”

“If you had asked me that a couple of hours ago, I would have said no.”

“What changed?”

Wesley ran his fingers through his hair. “He didn’t make a single hateful remark while we attempted the curses. The only person he really spoke to was Cordelia and he was…nice. It was a little unnerving to say the least.”

“Weird. So where’s blondie vamp? Did he show?”

“Yes. He’s upstairs as well.”

“Good. Nice or not, I don’t like the idea of Cordy bein’ alone with Angelus. Tell me I did NOT just say I was relieved Barbie’s with two vamps instead of one.”

“Spike is..colorful but he has a soul.”

“I know. He was pretty cool the last time he was here. Plus those chains are secure. I locked ’em myself.” Gunn sank into the nearest chair. “So now what?”

“I’m going to continue researching here. I’d like you to check on Fred. She doesn’t know the spells failed. I didn’t have the heart to tell her on the phone.”

“Sure. Lorne’s still workin’ his way through his contacts. He sent me back ’cause some of them don’t really like humans and some just don’t like me.”

“Why you?”

He shrugged. “Some of them still blame me for what happened at Caritas. Well I’m gonna head out.”

“Keep in touch.”

“Back at ya.”

Part 3

For the second time in less than twenty-four hours, consciousness returned to Angelus. He tried to move. Neither his hands nor his feet would budge.

He cautiously opened his eyes only to discover he was chained to his own bed. The last thing he remembered was answering the door. Clarity struck. The delivery guy shot him?

“What the fuck happened?”

“In a nutshell, the delivery guy shot you with a tranq dart.”

“You bitch! You worked this out in advance, didn’t you? You and Wesley came up with Sal’s as a back-up plan.”

Cordelia climbed onto the bed and straddled him. “Yeah. You got us. Wesley totally predicted that you’d want to make me as comfortable as possible so he came up with Sal’s. Don’t be such a dumbass. Who would have guessed you loved me and wanted to make me happy?”

“Then how?”

“Prepare to be impressed. I know I was. As demon hunters we so kick ass, but as detectives we kinda suck.” She began unbuttoning his shirt.

“The fact that you let me call and talk to them made Wes re-evaluate what he knew about you. He wondered what else you’d do for me. The restaurant had called and left a message about our missed reservation. Gunn pointed out that I would be hungry since I missed dinner. It was Fred’s idea to call Sal’s. She knew that’s where I order from when I’m upset.

They told her a Gavin ordered a small ham and pineapple pizza plus a pint of the flavor of the day ice cream. Wes called a guy he worked with when he…was on his own and had him pretend to be the delivery guy. He shot you, we brought you here and now you’re chained to your bed. Impressive, huh?”

“Yeah. I can’t wait to congratulate them.” He glanced down at his chest. “What are you doing?”

Her innocent face looked at him while her hands spread his shirt open. “What do you mean?” Her fingertips gently explored his chest. “Your chest is healed.”

“Your mark?”

“All better”

“I don’t know. It still feels a little tender.”

“Really?” He nodded. “Let me kiss it and make it better.” She leaned down and began kissing the healed handprint.

Angelus took an unnecessary breath. The feel of her lips and the heat of her tongue were driving him crazy. “Unchain me!”

“No” She resumed her kisses.

She crawled up his body. “Is my big bad vampire begging?”

“Stop being a bitch and set me loose.”

Cordy sat up and slapped him hard. “Stop calling me a bitch!”

“You’ve said it yourself.”

“Yeah. Well, I don’t like the way you say it. If you want me to leave, just say so.”

“No. I want you to unchain me.”

“Sorry I can’t. I’m not allowed. Now stop interrupting me.” Her hands slid down his chest. She undid the button to his pants and slowly unzipped them.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Taking advantage of your situation.” She leaned down to capture his lips. Her tongue traced his bottom lip. His mouth parted for her and his tongue came out to tangle with hers. “Mmm..I plan to have my wicked way with you.”

He groaned when her hand slipped inside his boxers to grab his rock hard cock. “Cor!”

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No. Please let me touch you.” He struggled against the chains.”

“Shh. It’s my turn to make you happy.” She continued to pump him while trailing kisses down his chest.

He growled when her hand disappeared. He felt her hands tug on his pants. He shifted his hips as best he could to help her slide them down.

Once she got them as far as she could, she licked her way up his thigh. His groan made her smile against his skin. Her mouth avoided where he craved her touch the most. Her tongue dipped into his navel.

“Cordy please!”

“Patience” Her hands moved to restrain his wriggling hips. His cock twitched angrily at her snub.

His natural face came forward with the first hot, wet stroke. “Yes!”

Her tongue gave a slow lick along the underside of his cock before taking the head into her mouth. She swirled her tongue around the tip.

She slid her mouth down his shaft. One hand moved to support the base while the other kept his hips still. She took a little more of him in with each slide of her mouth. When his body began to tense, she allowed him to thrust as much as he could. Her suction increased with each stroke. Her free hand began to rhythmically squeeze his balls. She relaxed her throat to take him deeper.

Angelus never wanted this to end. “So good..don’t stop….oh God..yes..Cordelia!” No longer able to hold back, he released his seed into her mouth.

She eagerly swallowed and continued to suck until he began to soften. She placed a kiss on the tip before laying down beside him. She giggled at the expression on his face. “Should I take the bumpies as a compliment?”

She stroked the ridges on his forehead. “You changed. So is that a good or a bad? You don’t usually do it unless you’re mad or being possessive.”

His face shifted back. “It happens when I lose control too.”

She scrunched up her face. “Is that good or should I feel insulted?”

“It was amazing.”

“I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. I hated not being able to give you a happy.”

“I’m glad to be of service. I’m available whenever you want.”

She rested her head on his shoulder. “I’ll keep it in mind.” Her hand started to stroke his chest. “I love you.”

He lifted his head to meet her eyes. “I love you too.” She smiled before kissing him hard. “Let me please you.”

“I want to taste you.”

“You’ve done that already. Let’s..”

“Don’t confuse me with soulboy.”

She stood and began to undress. Slowly, making sure he could watch her. “I see. So it wasn’t the vampire that came out to play when you walked in on me getting out of the shower?”

“It was an accident. You didn’t lock the door.”

“That’s because YOU removed the lock to your bathroom. I was covered in demon goo and I really didn’t want to wait until I got home to shower so I used yours.”

“I remember.”

“Do you remember tearing the towel off my body, throwing me over your shoulder and tossing me onto the bed? You spent the next hour tasting every inch of my body. You wouldn’t let me touch you. You growled at me when I said I couldn’t take any more. I lost count of how many times you made me cum. That wasn’t the vampire devouring me? You were pretty out of control that night and almost went too far.”

“But the soul was still there holding me back so it doesn’t count.”

She crawled onto the bed. She began to nibble on his neck, her heat teasing his thigh. “Tell me what you want?” She dragged her nails across his chest. “Do you want to use your teeth? Would like my blood to mix with my juices? Is that what you want baby?”

“Yes please!”

She grabbed his hair and yanked hard forcing him to look into her eyes. “You will keep your sharpies away from that part of my anatomy.” She reached down to get a firm grasp on his rapidly hardening cock. “Unless you want me to use this as a chew toy. Do you get me?”

“Yes! Now ease up.” She relaxed her grip on his hair and his cock. “Can I bite you in other places? You still don’t bear my mark. It’s not right.”

“When we get your soul back, I’ll let you mark me.”

“Angelus, I belong to you both. It wouldn’t be right to do it without your soul present.”

“But the soul is the reason I haven’t already done it.”

She rolled on top of him. “Please understand. I need you to wait.”

He looked up into her beautiful face. “Promise me you’ll make the soul cooperate.”

“I promise.”

“Let me taste you. I’ll be good.”

“I thought you were evil.”

“I’ll be less evil.”

She mumbled against his mouth. Her heat embraced the tip of his cock. “Can that wait until later? I need to feel you inside me.” She dragged her cleft along his length. “We’ve been waiting so long.”

Angelus tested his bonds. “You’re gonna have to do most of the work unless you unchain me.”

She balanced herself above him and stared deep into his eyes. “No problem.” She sunk down onto him taking in every inch until he filled her. Her eyes closed. “Finally” She captured his lips and whispered ‘I love you’ before rising.

He gave a slight whimper when her tight body left him and sighed in relief as she reclaimed him. Watching her ride him was a fantasy come true but he needed to touch her. Her eyes were closed in concentration. Her breasts bounced before him begging to be touched. He gave the chains another tug. He knew it was useless. They were the ones he had enchanted. “Play with your breasts for me.”

Cordelia opened her eyes and smiled at him. Her hands slowly rose from his chest and drifted up her body to cup both breasts. She squeezed and pinched her nipples in rhythm with their joined bodies.

“Come closer” She leaned in for a kiss. Their tongues fought for dominance. She pulled back and lifted his head so he could engulf a nipple. He suckled and nibbled with blunt teeth. His mouth released her and she drew him to the other breast.

“Yes!” His mouth and cock created a fire within her. She sat back and increased her pace. She began to ride him at a full gallop. With an arched back, she reached behind her to gently squeeze his pouch.

His eyes crossed. Her muscles began to tighten even more. “ fucking tight. C’mon baby ride me.” He looked up at her pleasure filled face. “Tease your clit for me. Let me see you cum.” She moved a hand to her nubbin and began stroking. “A little faster. That’s it. Cum for me. Clamp down on me baby.”

The fire was now a raging inferno. “So close. Just a little bit more.”

“I love you.”

His words sent her crashing over the edge. The blaze set off a series of explosions from the tips of her toes to the top of her head. “Angelus!”

Hearing his name shouted in climax and feeling her muscles contract around his cock set him off like a live wire. His hips arched off the bed. “Cordelia!” He groaned as her body milked him dry.

She collapsed on his chest. Her lips melted against his. Her hands spread out to thread their fingers. She moved to nuzzle his neck.

She giggled. “I never promised not to bite.” She could feel him start to harden inside her. “Mmm..vampire stamina.”

“That’s what you get for biting me. You should let me return the favor.”

Cordelia slowly started to ride him again. “OK”

“You can bite me here.” She pointed to her right breast.”

“You are so good to me baby. I won’t make it deep. I wouldn’t want to mar the world’s most perfect breasts.” His hips managed to thrust in time with her movements. “So perfect.” Imaging the taste of her blood, he increased his pace.

His thrusting drove her to ride him harder. Her head was thrown back in ecstasy. He seemed to be even deeper this time. Her hands rested on his chest for balance. Her orgasm snuck up on her quickly. His forceful thrusts hit the right spot again and again. A rainbow of colors burst behind her eyes and the world spun. She pulled his head to her breast.

Angelus gently sunk his fangs in. Her blood filled his mouth. It was unlike anything he’d ever tasted. His body exploded in the strongest orgasm of his life..unlife..of his entire existence.

The feel of his teeth and the pull of his lips sent her crashing again. “Oh God!”

He withdrew his fangs and licked the wound until it stopped bleeding.

She whimpered as his cock slipped from her sated body. She reached down for a kiss before rolling to lie beside him.

Angelus stared at her. He saw love and acceptance unlike anything he’d ever imagined to be possible. “I will live in thy heart, die in thy lap, and be buried in thy eyes ” A smile spread over her features making him feel as if he was witnessing a sunrise for the first time.

“Did my vampire just recite poetry?”

Angelus slammed his head back against his pillow. “What have you done to me?”

“Made you fall in love silly. Pretty soon you’ll be stealing a locket for me. What would James have said? Or better yet Spike?”

“I will kill you if you breathe a word of this to Spike!”

She arched a brow. “You’d kill me?”

“No but there would definitely be torture involved.”

“After I was nice enough to let you bite me?”

He licked his lips reliving her taste. “Your blood is so different.”

“Well duh! I’m a higher being. You’ve never tasted one before. Unless you sampled the oracles when you found their bodies.”

“Soulboy would never do that. Besides I was too busy trying to save you.”

“My hero. So a good different or a bad different? Is my blood yucky?”

“No. I only had a little but I feel as if my hunger has been quenched. Like I could go days without feeding again.”

“Really? That could come in handy. It’s not like I’m gonna go shopping for human blood and I don’t want you spitting pig’s blood at me.”

“Are you offering me yours?”

“It makes sense. At least until we find a way to get your soul back. I feel fine and you said you don’t need very much of it. Umm..if ask you something, will you tell me the truth?”

“Do you think your soul will be angry at me for letting you feed off me?”

Angelus considered his answer carefully. “I’ll be furious that you put yourself in danger but when have I ever been able to stay mad at you?”

“Good point. I’ll just cross that bridge when I come to it. First I’ll have to deal with Wes and Gunn. They won’t approve.”

“Who cares what the baby snatcher and anger boy think?”

“I do and use their names please.”

“Since when do you let anyone tell you what to do?”

“Oh I don’t but I’ll give them the chance to argue their point.”

“That’s my girl.”

“Pfft. You’re only saying that ‘cuz I’m giving you what you want. Normally you’re the one I’m ignoring.”

“True” Cordelia kissed him before climbing out of bed. “Where are you going?”

“To clean up. I need to check in with the others.” She came back with a wet towel and began wiping him off.

“Don’t! I want to keep your scent on me.”

“Eww. I’m not gonna leave you all sticky.” She ignored his growls. She tugged his boxers and pants back up. He started to get hard again while she gently put him away and closed his pants. “You’re insatiable.”

“I’ll never get enough of your touch.”

“Sweet talker.” She kissed him again as she buttoned his shirt. Gathering her clothes, she headed to the bathroom.

He heard the shower running. He didn’t want to lose her scent on his skin but he really hated the thought of her washing away his.

She came back out fully dressed. He had his eyes closed but his body was obviously tense. “What’s wrong?”

“You seemed to be in a hurry to wash away my scent now that you got what you wanted.”

“You’re being ridiculous. Some of us don’t even have vampire senses. I was sweaty and needed to cool off. I’m leaving because I need to check on our family. I haven’t even called Connor yet. I cleaned you up ‘cuz the witch should be here soon to perform the spell and nobody but me gets to see your naked body.” She jumped onto the bed and kissed him hard.

“Besides it’s not like this was a one time deal. I plan to ravage you again.” She kissed his forehead. “And again.” She kissed the tip of his nose. “And again.” She kissed his mouth, her tongue demanding entry. “And again. Be a good vampire while I’m gone?”

“I can’t do much chained to this bed.”

“I’ll be back soon. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Part 2

“Angel Investigations. We..”

“Wesley! Are you alright?”

“Cordelia? Thank goodness. Where are you? Angelus in on the loose.”

“I know. I’m in a hotel suite. I’m pretty sure I’m still in LA.”

“Where is Angelus? Do you see any means to escape?”

“Actually he’s standing in front of me.”

“Dear lord! Cordelia..”

“Calm down. Have you called Sunnydale yet?”

Wesley was confused by her lack of fear. “I left a message. I tried all the numbers in your rolodex.”

“Okay. Whenever they call, ask Willow to try the curse. I doubt it will work. Wolfram and Hart wouldn’t have gone through with their plan if it was just a matter of recursing him.”

“You’re probably right. Speaking of Wolfram and Hart..”

“Don’t even get me started. That evil bitch you were screwing ordered my capture and dissection.”

“Yeah. She wanted to make sure I felt it too.”

“By the time we got there, the place was crawling with police. They were carting off quite a few bodies. We feared the worst.”

“I warned Lilah she hadn’t seen Angel’s bad side yet. They had no clue what they were doing.”

“Cordelia, umm..what exactly is Angelus doing right now?”

“Pacing. He’s waiting for me to hang up. One last thing, I don’t want Connor coming home. I don’t care what you have to do. Make sure he stays where he is.” Angelus snatched the phone away. “Hey! I wasn’t finished!”

“I think I’ve been more than patient. You keep forgetting who you’re dealing with.”

“Pfft. I haven’t forgotten anything.” She giggled when she saw Angelus start to undress. “What are you doing?”

“Getting undressed. What does it look like?”

“Not that I’m not enjoying the show or anything but why?”

“I let you call Watcherboy. I even let you talk about recursing me which we both know won’t work. Now we’re gonna have sex.”

She arched a brow. “Oh really? I believe I told you not until I’m ready and right now I’m hungry.”

In a flash he was on the bed. He grabbed her by the hair and twisted exposing her neck to him. He leaned in to whisper. “I think you need to start taking me seriously, little girl.” She placed a hand on his chest. He could feel his flesh start to sizzle.

“I could say the same about you. Forcing me to do anything I don’t want to do is NOT an option.”

“You won’t kill me.”

“Your soul would never forgive me if I let you hurt me. You couldn’t handle the guilt later.” Her stomach growled. “See. We were on our way to dinner when I was kidnapped.” Her bottom lip poked out in a pout. “I’m hungry.”

Angelus looked down at his burnt chest. “Fine. I’ll order room service.”

“No. I was kidnapped, nearly mutilated and my boyfriend’s soul was stolen. I’ve had a really bad day and you know what that means?”

“Small ham and pineapple pizza from Sal’s.”

“Don’t forget the ice cream.”

He gave her his best tortured face. “What flavor?”

“The special of the day is fine. Ben & Jerry’s doesn’t have a bad flavor.”

“You expect me to pay?”

“Duh! What did you think? I was gonna sit here and watch you drain the delivery guy.”

“Woman, you are..”

“I know but it’s part of the reason you love me so much. Now order.”

“You’re just lucky Gavin keeps so much cash in his wallet and I still have that nice full feeling.”

“Eww and you stole his wallet?”

“Yeah. It’s not like he’ll be needin’ it. He’s paying for the suite too. He’s a pretty generous guy.”

“Lilah the psycho bitch you let go but you kill Mr-I’m-going-to-bury-you-in-paperwork! What did he ever do to you?”

“He took you.”

“You don’t think Lilah did the dirty work herself, did you?”

“That bastard!”

“Exactly. So who cares if Wolfram and Hart is down a few lawyers and some security guards. Don’t you feel better knowing I didn’t kill any innocent people to feed. I think that deserves a reward of the naked variety.”

“Pfft. Don’t you have a call to make?” He flipped his cell phone open and called. She could hear him mumbling into the phone but couldn’t make out what hotel they were in. “Where are we?”

“In a hotel somewhere in Los Angeles.”

“That helped.”

Angelus jumped onto the bed and laid down next to her. “Whatever will we do to pass the time?”

“We can talk.” She ignored his growl. “When did you fall in love with me?”

“I’m an evil vampire. I refuse to lie here and talk about my feelings.”

She rolled over to rest her head on his shoulder. Her hand stroked his bare chest. “Please. I know Angel’s answer. He doesn’t like to talk about his demon.” She smiled as he began to purr. “I love it when you do that.”

“I love it when you make me do it.” Her hand brushed his burn. He winced.

“I’m sorry.” She kissed her scorched hand print. “Better?”

“Don’t stop.”

Her kisses turned to licks. “Answer my question. When did you fall in love with me?”

His purr grew louder. “I don’t know when. I just know I do.”

She gave one of his nipples a lick. “How long have you wanted me?”

He groaned when her tongue was replaced with her teeth. “When we first ran into each other here in LA.”

Her head popped up. “Really?”

He pulled her head back down to his chest. “It was just lust back then.”

“So you didn’t notice me in Sunnydale either?”

“I noticed you but you came on so strong. I’ve had enough whores in my time. I like a challenge. OWW! What the fuck was that for?”

She sat up. “I’m not a whore!”

He grabbed her before she could leave. He threw a leg over her lower half and wrapped an arm around her chest. “I know you’re not a whore. I didn’t back then. Now, I know it was just an act.” He planted a kiss behind her ear.

“You looked so hot at the party. Soulboy was so happy to see a familiar face. You totally blew me off. I wanted to take you right there but the soul wouldn’t cooperate. He needed to protect that dumb bitch Tina. Didn’t do a very good job though.”

“So you just wanted me because I wasn’t interested?”

“I told you. I like a challenge. You’ve definitely been that. I’ll never forget the day you showed up on my doorstep with your suitcases. I was standing there in nothing but a towel and you didn’t even seem to notice. Your obliviousness to my charms didn’t end there. I blame the soul. He stood back and let other men touch you.”

He nuzzled her neck. “I plan to make you forget everyone of them.”

He answered by capturing her lips in a searing kiss. Her moan was echoed by his.

“Delivery for room 607.”

Angelus growled. “Are you sure I can’t kill him?”

She giggled and pushed him away. “Answer the door and be good.”

“I’m evil.”

“Then be less evil. Don’t make me fry your ass. I have other plans for it.”

He caught her lips with a growl. “I’m gonna hold you to that.” Angelus grabbed Gavin’s wallet on his way to the door. “Give me the pizza.”

“Sure thing, Angelus.”

Cordelia screamed when the delivery guy pulled out a gun and fired it at Angelus. She watched him collapse mid lunge. She raced to his side. “What did you do to him?”

The man took a step back when Cordelia began to glow.

“Cordy, are you okay?”

“Thank goodness we got to you in time.”

“How..What did he do to him?”

“He’s only unconscious. Willow is sending a witch from her coven to perform the spell. Giles’ assured me she’s quite powerful. Willow doesn’t feel strong enough to work with such ancient magics.”

“How’s Connor?”

“Not happy which is to be expected under the circumstances. He wanted to return home. I finally convinced him to stay put. I told him there was a chance Angelus might go after Buffy and her loved ones. He agreed to stay and protect Dawn. He warned me he wouldn’t attempt to take him alive.”

“I understand. It was good thinking but just so you know. Angelus wasn’t planning on going to Sunnydale.”

“I didn’t think he would. At least not until we were all dead.”

“He could have killed you before but he didn’t.”

“We’ll talk about it after we get him back to the hotel and chained up.”

“Where’s Gunn?”

“He’s waiting with the car.” He continued at her raised brow. “Let’s just say Connor isn’t the only one with the stake first attitude.”

“Cordy, I’m so glad you’re alright. You are alright? He didn’t hurt you, did he? Wesley said he was Angelus now. I don’t know how he could have had his moment of perfect happiness ’cause you and he would never..I mean you and he didn’t..”

“I’m fine Fred. He didn’t hurt me and no. Angel and I didn’t. Wolfram and Hart used a spell to remove his soul.”

“Angelus is chained to his bed. He won’t be going anywhere. Angel had the chains enchanted a while back. Just in case.”

“He did?”

Wesley cleared his throat. “He told me about them when I returned. So Wolfram and Hart used a spell?”

Cordelia decided to let the chains drop. “Apparently. The plan was to leave Angelus in the alley and just take me.”

“Why did Lilah only want you? Wesley said she was planning to dissect you. Why would she do that? I mean..”

“Angelus said Wolfram and Hart wanted me because I’m a higher being living on this plane. Lilah wanted me alive because Wesley chose me over her.”

“Cordelia, I’m..”

“Don’t even think of apologizing for what that bitch tried to do to me. She’s gonna have to answer to the Senior Partners. They’re not going to be too happy with her right now. Since Gavin’s already dead, the blame will fall on her shoulders. It couldn’t happen to a nicer girl. I don’t plan on worrying about them. So when is Willow’s friend supposed to get here?”

“In an hour or two.”

“Okay. I don’t expect the spell to work so we need to research other ways to return his soul. Get Lorne to check his contacts. Wes, I want you to hit the books. Fred, I want you to take the laptop to my apartment. There’s a box in my closet. Dennis can help you find it. It has everything you need to perform the un-invite spell. You can research from there.”

“Why do I..”

“Fred sweetie, I don’t want you anywhere near Angelus. Gunn, why don’t you go with her. Once the spell is done you can meet up with Lorne and help him.”

“I think I should stay and watch Angelus.”

“Don’t worry. Wes and I will be here. The chains are enchanted so he isn’t getting loose. Besides Spike should be here soon.”

“Did you want him to come? You didn’t mention anything. I’m afraid I didn’t ask for his help.”

“Don’t worry Wes. He’s on his way. Actually you couldn’t keep him away if you tried. Trust me.”

“Speaking of blondie vamp, why can’t we do the same thing for Angel?”

“We can’t. What Spike did isn’t something we can do for Angel. Only Angelus can face the trials and be rewarded with his soul.”

“Damn! No way is evil vamp gonna do it.”

“I know. You guys have your assignments so get going.”

Wesley polished his glasses. “What are you going to do?”

“Keep an eye on Angelus. He may be chained but he’s nothing if not resourceful.”

“Maybe Gunn should..”

“No. I’ll be fine. In fact, I don’t want anyone but Wes, Spike and I to go in there.”

“Why? I..”

“Gunn, I know you’re an important member of this, but the whole Angel/Angelus thing is hard enough for you as it is. Spending time with Angelus is going to make it that much harder once we get Angel back.”

“What about me?”

“Sweetie, I think Angel would rather you not meet his soulless half.”

“I faced him in Pylea.”

“Not exactly. That was the demon’s purest form. Angelus can be just as hurtful with his words as he is with his hands. Wes and I know him and so does Spike. I really think it’s for the best if you and Gunn don’t see him like this.”

“Okay. I guess I can understand that but aren’t you the one he wants to hurt the most?”

“He won’t hurt me physically and I can handle what he has to say.”

“Cordelia, I think you might be..”

“Look Wes. I know what I’m talking about. I know who and what he is. I know if Angelus was to walk down those stairs right now and saw how close you were standing, your hand on my shoulder, he would snap your neck before you could blink.” Wes snatched his hand away like he’d been burned. All three took a step back.

“Just like I know I would dust him if he tried. Let me remind all of you. I have the ability to dust him up in his room from right here. I’m not a doe eyed teenager trying to justify why I can’t kill my boyfriend even though he’s killing people.

Okay so I’m not exactly broken up over the dead lawyers but let them try to dissect you and see how sympathetic you are. Angelus is going to remain chained. I am going to do whatever it takes to get him his soul back. I don’t plan on losing the man I love because some evil lawyers thought Angelus would join their team if they released him.”

“Don’t yell at me but why didn’t the evil vamp join them?”

“Partly because they made the mistake of taking me.”

“He loves me.”

“I thought the soulless one wasn’t capable of love.”

“You thought wrong. Now guys we need to start working. The world’s champion needs our help.”

Fred grabbed the laptop. “I’m ready. We’ll find a way.”

“Yes. Let’s try to be positive. Perhaps the curse will work. Wolfram and Hart may have been counting on Angelus killing us before we could try to recurse him.”

“Yeah English. Way to be positive.”

“C’mon Charles.”

“Okay. Let’s go.”

“I’ll call Lorne.”

“I’ll check on Angelus.”

“Everyone should check in on an hourly basis. We must remain on alert. Angelus is subdued but Wolfram and Hart may still have plans. Lilah might try something to salvage the situation. Watch your backs.”

Baby I’m Back. 1   1 comment

Part 1

Consciousness returned as if a fog was slowly being lifted. Angelus threw a rat that was nibbling on his hand. It hit the wall with a satisfying crunch. He pulled himself to his feet.

The soul was gone. Memories started to flash through his brain. He tried to focus on how he ended up in this alley. Soulboy and the luscious Cordelia Chase were on their way to dinner. They stopped to make out like always…and now he was free.

Angelus frantically searched the alley. No heartbeat. No blood. No Cordelia. He sniffed the air. He pushed away the usual stench of the alley and concentrated on the lingering scents of humans. One of them was..familiar. A feral growl started from the tips of his toes and exploded throughout his body. Lawyers.

He clutched his keys as he raced to the plymouth.

“Angel.” Wesley rose when he saw Angel begin to rummage through the weapon’s cabinet. “What’s wrong? Where’s Cordelia?”

“Wolfram and Hart took her.”

“I’ll call Gunn and Fred.”

“Don’t bother.”

“Why? What’s your plan?”

“I’m going to barge in there and kill everything that stands between me and what’s mine.”

“Angel, I..”

Angelus’ yellow eyes glared at Wesley. “Look Watcher. I have no clue what those fucking lawyers are doing to her. I don’t have time to kill you properly right now. But if you call me Angel one more time, I’ll forego slow and painful and just snap your neck now! It’s not as much fun for me, but I’ll get over it. I have lawyers to kill.”

Wesley grabbed a taser and lunged. Angelus easily sidestepped and caught his wrist. The last thing Wesley heard was laughter as his world went dark.

“Where is she, Gavin?”

“Miss Morgan. So good to see you.”

“Cut the crap. Where is she?”

“She’s in the lab. The specialist is preparing to begin. Don’t worry. I already notified your mind reader. Plus the whole thing is being recorded. You can monitor it on channel 5.”

“Fabulous.” Lilah pressed a button and a big screen TV dropped from the ceiling. She switched it to the right channel. Cordelia was strapped to a table. She still wore her red dress. Just like Snow White, she was trapped in a waking death.

Although no Prince Charming was going to come to her rescue. Actually her Prince would enjoy watching this Snow White get carved up. *Mental note: Send Angelus a copy of the videotape.*

“Who says there’s never anything good on TV?”

“There’s Dr. Augerheim now.” A human-like man with gray skin entered the lab. He was followed by one of the company’s mind readers. Gavin absently noticed this was the first time he’d seen her without her identical twin sister nearby. “It won’t be long now.”

“Unfortunately you won’t be alive to enjoy it.” Angelus dropped the security guard’s body.

“How did you get in?”

“Oh, you mean the vampire detectors. Well they detected me right before I killed them. They make a really cool squealing noise. ‘Course it stops once you pull its heart out.”

Gavin and Lilah backed away from the furious vampire. Lilah tried to remain calm. She handled evil on a daily basis. “Is there something we can do for you, Angelus?”

“There seems to be some confusion. I’m guessin’ you thought I’d be grateful to you for freeing me. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk No matter how many files you have on me, you’ll never know me.” Angelus grabbed the man who’d been sneaking up on him and plunged his fangs in. “You’ll never be able to predict what I’ll do next.”

“Let me remind you. We are on the same side.”

Angelus started laughing. “You really are a stupid bitch. I’m going to enjoy killing you but first I need to deal with Gavin here.”

“Yeah. It seems you took something that belongs to me.” He pointed to the screen. “Do you know what happens to people who steal from me?”

“I was just following orders. I work for Miss Morgan. She ordered me to take Miss Chase for dissection and study. She wanted her alive so she’d feel every cut. She even insisted on a mind reader to make sure. My only goal was the removal of your soul. Lilah is the one who stole your fun. I advised her to let you kill your seer youself.”

“Gavin, you little worm!”

“Shut up! There’s no point in begging. No mercy. As someone once told me, there’s just first and second.” He had Gavin by the throat in a flash.

Lilah heard the snap as she ran. She had seriously misjudged Angelus and it was about to cost her her life.

Angelus helped himself to Gavin’s wallet before chasing Lilah. She didn’t get very far.

Lilah screamed when she was grabbed by her hair. “I can be of use to you, Angelus. I’m in charge now. Just tell me what you want and I can make it happen.”

“You ordered my property stolen and tortured. Actually even if you hadn’t, I still would have killed you. Why don’t you people understand? When you torture Soulboy, you torture me. I’m stuck inside. I know you were banking on me being grateful. Let me give you some insight into Angelus. I don’t like to feel indebted to anyone. It makes me cranky.

But you are right about one thing. You can be useful to me. You’re going to take me to Cordelia!”

“Wesley! What happened?”

“Angelus stopped by.”

Gunn helped the dazed Englishman over to the red couch. “Please tell me you meant Angel.” Wes shook his head. “Beige Angel?”

“Afraid not. It was Angelus.”

Fred returned with the first aid kit. “No. That can’t be. Cordy and Angel wouldn’t..”

“I don’t believe they did. Angelus came here to get weapons. He claimed Wolfram and Hart took her.” His horrified eyes looked up at his friends. “Dear Lord! Wolfram and Hart have Cordelia. Grab some weapons. We need to get over there.”

Gunn went to the weapon’s cabinet. “I don’t get it. Why does evil vamp care?” He tossed a crossbow to Wes. “Why do you think he left you alive?”

“I don’t know. I’ll think about it after we rescue Cordelia. Make sure you bring tasers and tranq darts. We should try to take Angelus alive.”

“We promised Angel we’d stake him if he ever went evil again. I don’t know about you, English, but I keep my promises.”

“Don’t lecture me. I know what I promised and I will keep it if I have to. Right now Cordelia is my priority and she happens to be very much in love with the vampire in question.”

“Y’all both need to stop worrin’ about what we may or may not need to do about Angelus. Either Wolfram and Hart have Cordy or Angelus does. I for one don’t really like either possibility. Now both of you get in the truck!”

The Texan stormed out of the hotel with two sheepish well-armed men trailing behind.

“Wake up sleepyhead.”

Cordelia groaned. She felt like her head had been run over by a truck. Repeatedly. “Angel?”

“How do you feel?”

“Like someone tried to detach my head. I had the worst nightmare.”

“Tell me all about it, baby.”

“I was captured by..some baddies. They were going to cut me open.” She shivered. “It felt so real. It was like I could feel the metal blade against my skin.” She smiled. “And then you came to my rescue. You killed the baddies and carried me away.” Cordelia finally managed to open her eyes. “Umm…Angel, where are we?”

“I rented this beautiful hotel suite for us. Don’t you like it?”

Her head hurt like crazy and now she was completely confused. She tried to recall how they got here. “The last thing I remember was kissing you in the alley. How did we get here?”

“I carried you here.”

“After I killed the bastard who tried to cut you open, I brought you here.”

“Oh God! It wasn’t a dream?”

“Sorry baby. Don’t worry. I didn’t let them hurt you.”

“Who were they? What did they want?”

“Explanations later. It feels like I’ve been waiting forever to fuck you.”

“Excuse me? Are you insane? We can’t risk your soul and what’s with the crude?”

“Don’t have a soul and what’s wrong with fucking?”

Cordelia felt the air rush out of her lungs. “What?”

“Baby, I’m back!”

“How? Seeing me laid out and about to be cut open gave you a happy? This isn’t funny.”

Angelus jumped on the bed. “Who’s laughing?” He rolled his eyes at her dumbfounded look.

“Fine. Explanations now. Wolfram and Hart found a way to remove my soul. They were smart enough to leave me in the alley but they took you. They were going to dissect you for study. Not only that, Lilah wanted you to be alive so you could feel every cut. Dumb bitch thought I was just gonna let them have you. I came and got you. Now we’re here. Answers given. ready to fuck yet.”

Cordelia clutched the covers. “Woah! Back up Fangboy. What the hell? Why would the evil lawyers want to dissect me?”

“Probably ’cause you’re a higher being. They don’t normally live in this realm.”

“That bitch! She wanted me to feel..”

“C’mon. You can’t really blame her for hating you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Cor, you stormed into the Watcher’s apartment, found them mid-fuck, grabbed her clothes, threw them in her face and told her to get out. Instead of telling you to go to hell, Wussley backed you up and kicked her to the curb.”

“Well she was using him. She took advantage of his dark time like another skanky ho we both knew.”

“Don’t start with that. Soulboy’s responsible for that fuck up. I was just sayin’ it’s understandable is all.”

“I can’t say I’m broken up about you killing her. I know that’s bad but I still hated her for the killer visions. I’m so not gonna miss her!”

“Umm..I didn’t kill her.”

“You let the bitch who tried to gut me go free? What kind of evil vamp are you? You were probably impressed by her creativity.”

“No! Maybe a little and I didn’t LET her go. She ran while I was busy killin’ the thing tryin’ to gut you. How was I supposed to know there was a secret passageway? I would have gone after her but I needed to get you out before the do-gooders showed up.”

“There weren’t enough weapons in the car. I had to stop at the hotel. I..”

“Oh God! What did you do? Was anyone there? Are they hurt?”

“Damn woman! Give a vampire a chance to answer. Just breathe. The baby snatcher was there. I told him who took you and what I planned to do to them. He tried to stop..”

“Quit your cryin’! I didn’t kill him.”

“You didn’t?”

“You’re sure?”

“I’ve been killin’ a long time now. I know the difference between unconscious and dead.”

“Not that I’m complaining but why would YOU leave him alive?” She wrinkled her brow in confusion. “You saved me. Why?”

“Killing him wasn’t the reason I went to the hotel. I didn’t have any time to waste.” Angelus stood up and began pacing.

“Why did you rescue me?”

“Because you’re mine.”

“Am I?”

“Yes.” He walked around the bed to sit in front of her. “I know you’re in love with soulboy but he’s gone.” He stroked her collarbone with his thumb. “I know how to please a woman. If you give me a chance, I could make you happy. You might even grow to love me.”

“Angelus, I can’t grow to love you.” She grabbed the hand that was stroking her. “You’ve heard me say how much I love my sweet manpire. Where do you think you fit in?” The bed shook as he jumped up.

He put his fist through the wall with a growl. “So that’s it? I resisted killing Wesley. I save you from being gutted. Do you even realize what I could have done to you while you were unconscious? I didn’t even tie you up and you won’t even give me a chance. You haven’t changed. You’re still a bitch!”

“Hey! Stop with the name calling and answer my question. Where do you fit in?”

“Don’t talk to me like that. I don’t put up with abuse. I give it. So stop. I get it. I don’t fit in. It doesn’t matter. You’re mine. I’m not letting you go.”

“With or without a soul you’re still a dumbass. You are the ‘pire’ in manpire.”

“Listen carefully. I can’t grow to love you because I’m already IN love with you.”

“I told you not to play with me. I’m not a whipped puppy. I hit back. I’m a master vampire. A monster. A killer. I could snap your neck in an instant.”

“Yeah! Yeah! In case you forgot, let me remind you. I can use my super glowy power and dust you without even getting up from this bed.” She pat the spot he vacated. “Come here.” She grabbed his hand. “I do love you.”

“But I’m Angelus. You love the soul. I’m not him.”

“I know who you are and I plan to do whatever it takes to get your soul back. That doesn’t mean I don’t love you too.” He opened his mouth to argue.

“Angelus, I gave up the world of black and white a long time ago. I don’t need to think of you as two completely different people. I fell in love with Angel. Completely. Which means loving the man and the vampire.”

“How? Why?”

“How? Kicking and screaming. Falling in love with you was so not on my list of things to do. Believe me I fought against it. I clung to denial like it was a designer original. Why? That’s hard to explain. I don’t know when I stopped telling myself you were two completely different people. I just know I did.” She searched his eyes for understanding.

“Angelus, do you love me?”

“I’m a soulless vampire. I…”

“Don’t even think of giving me that crap. I know better. Do you love me?”

“I think so.”

Cordelia leaned forward to gently capture his lips. “Do you love me?”

“Yes.” He pulled her in for a deeper kiss. “I love you so much.” He pushed her onto her back. “I want you now.”

She pushed him up. “Are you sure you didn’t kill Wesley? When you say unconscious, are we talking coma or just out like a light? When you say alive, do you mean he may be missing some body parts but he’ll live?”

“Dammit woman! I don’t want to talk anymore. Now is the time for fucking.”

“You’re such a romantic. I need to know if our family is okay. Please!”

“Fine.” He walked over to wear his coat lay. “Here.” He tossed her his cell phone. “Call them but we are fu..having sex when you’re finished.”

She rolled her eyes. “We’ll fuck when I’m ready and not before.”

“Gavin, how is your project proceeding?”

“We’re a go for tonight.”

“So soon?”

“Yes. The gypsy woman is ready. Are you sure you don’t want us to bring Angelus here?”

“No. The Senior Partners agree that it will take some time for Angelus to join our team. Besides he’ll be eager to hunt his merry band of do-gooders. Who are we to stop his fun?”

“You’re not concerned about his attachment to Miss Chase?”

“I’m sure he won’t be happy we robbed him of the pleasure of killing her, but I don’t forsee any problems. Angelus won’t share his soul’s love for his seer. He still has plenty of friends to torture. He’ll probably want to finish what he started in Sunnydale.”

“Umm..didn’t he try to have the world sucked into hell there?”

Lilah shrugged. “Yes but Acathla was taken care of. He won’t be able to try that again. What about the rest of the project?”

“The specialist is in the air as we speak. He seemed rather excited for the opportunity to dissect a higher being. It really is a shame we can’t interrogate her first.”

“I know. Her new powers make it too dangerous. We can’t risk it.”

“If that’s the case, shouldn’t we kill her right away?”

“NO! I want her alive. The drugs will keep her immobile. I want that bitch to feel every cut.”

“Lilah, I realize you feel..angry about the role she played in Wesley’s return to Angel investigations, but keeping her alive during the dissection IS an unnecessary risk.”

“I am NOT a scorned lover. Wesley was a project. Nothing more. Cordelia Chase is the reason that project failed. I don’t like losing. Taking her alive is a risk I’m willing to take and it’s Miss Morgan to you. Now I want all the details. We don’t want any more failures.”

“We’ve been monitoring the couple’s activities. They have their usual 8:00 reservation at Le Petit Renard. We anticipate Angel will once again refuse valet parking and park the car himself. When they take their shortcut through the alley, my snipers will knock them out. The darts have been specifically designed for their demons. The sedatives should work immediately.

My team will move in from the adjoining building I rented. The gypsy will perform the spell there. Once the spell is done, we will return with the seer. Angelus will be left in the alley as directed. His drug should wear off quickly. We wouldn’t want to cause any unwanted attention as corpses that walk out of the city morgue tend to do.”

“What’s the ETA of the specialist?”

“He will be landing at 8:30. He should be ready to start by 9 o’clock.”

Lilah smiled. “Excellent. I’ll have a mind reader standing by. I want to make sure Cordelia enjoys her final moments.”

Gavin adjusted his tie. *What an evil bitch!* “Umm..I should check on all the last minute details.”

“Gavin, you’re sure he won’t be able to be cursed again?”

“Yes. Her spell is designed in such a way that renders the old curse useless. He will be Angelus again and Angel will be gone forever.”

“That’s what I wanted to hear. You may go now.”

“I will update you when it’s finished Lil..Miss Morgan.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

“I miss Connor.”

Cordelia glanced over at her boyfriend. “He’ll be home in a few days.”

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into letting him go. It’s creepy.”

“It’s not creepy.” She noticed his raised eyebrow. *He’s totally starting to act like me.*

“OK. It’s a little creepy. Your son taking your ex-girlfriend’s little sister to winter formal is not of the norm but our lives are never normal. It’ll be good for Connor to be around other teenagers and Dawn deserves a nice high school memory. If she went with one of her classmates, Spike and Xander would have stalked her all night. Hell Buffy probably would have volunteered to chaperone the dance! Buffy and Spike can trust Conner to keep her safe. It’s sweet when you ignore the creep factor.”

Angel reached over and squeezed her thigh. “I know. It’s just I let my only child visit the hellmouth alone so he could date my ex-girlfriend’s little sister. Our lives might not be normal but this seems extreme even for us.”

“It wouldn’t be an issue if you weren’t such a craddle robber.”

He gave her a mock hurt look. “I didn’t hear you complaining last night.”

She snorted. “Then you weren’t listening ‘cuz I know I did some complaining!”

“We’ll find a way around the curse.”

“I know. Wes and Fred are on it.” She saw him tense up. “Have I told you what a wonderful manpire you are lately?”

“No. I believe you called me a craddle robber.”

She slid across the front seat and nuzzled his neck. “You are my sweet manpire. I love you for letting Wesley come back home.”

“I know. It’s getting better. Conner and Wes seem to be getting along.” He growled as the car jerked. “Cor! Seatbelts!”

“’re no fun.”

“We’re almost there. Then you can bite me all you want.”

“Pull over here for the valet.”

“You know you point that out every time and I always say no. Maybe it’s time to give up. There is no way I’m letting some stranger drive my car.”

“You’re so anal. You always park in the same spot and then you make me walk through that smelly alley.”

He gave her a smirk. “Maybe that’s because every time we go into that alley you always want to stop and make out.”

“That’s because we’re always early. We have to do something to kill time.”

“Well I just want to make sure we aren’t late. You never know when you might get caught in traffic.”

“Uh huh. I’m sure that’s the reason.”

He put the plymouth in park and did his best to wipe the smile off his face. “Looks like we’re early again.”

“I think that alley is the only reason you take me out to dinner.”

He gave her his best innocent face. “That’s not true. I know how much you love the food here. I just want to make you happy.”

“I’m happy when you cook for me.” She took his hand as he helped her out of the car.

“I know but we’re never alone. Someone’s always at the hotel.”

“What’s wrong with my place?”

“Dennis has already seen more of you than I’d like. I don’t know why you insist on keeping that apartment.”

“Because you haven’t found a way to move Dennis yet.”

“Don’t you think it’s time for Dennis to move on? It isn’t healthy for him to cling onto this plane.”

She smacked his chest. “Nobody messes with my ghost! You used to be nice to him.”

Angel grumbled, “Yeah well that was before I found out how helpful he was in the bathroom.”

“I don’t know why you’re still mad about that. So he scrubs my back. What’s the big deal?”

He grabbed her arms and pushed her against the alley wall. “My hands are the only ones that are allowed to touch your body.”

“Don’t I have a say?”

“No” He smothered her retort with his mouth.

*If he wasn’t such an amazing kisser I would so have to kick his caveman ass right now!* She reached around his neck and pulled him closer. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her shoulder before her world went black.

Angel felt the dart pierce his back. His growl never made it out of his throat before he collapsed.

One of the doors in the alley opened. A group of men dressed in black, a man in a suit and a woman stepped out.

“Let’s move. Grab Miss Chase and load her in the van. Have another sedative standing by. If she so much as twitches, hit her again.” Gavin turned to the woman. “Start the spell!”
